Excerpt

I was transfixed. It wasn’t just the way she mastered the room. It wasn’t just how her choreography perfectly correlated with the entrancing music. It wasn’t just her sex appeal. It was that unwavering gaze and focus on her task. To the rest of the room, staring blatantly at her admirable—ahem—assets, she was an object, but I recognized the barely controlled passion roiling under her skin. What would it be like to be that strong? Not just physically, but strong in a way that allowed her to bare her soul to a group of greedy strangers. My passions were locked away safely inside me and yet she put it all out there. Such bravery and passion.

In certain moments, I swear she looked right at me—quick stolen glances that shot a bolt of adrenaline down my spine. Perhaps this was a skill she learned to earn more tips, as the money was out in droves now, peppered over the stage and her sweating skin. But I swore she saw me. Saw through me. To the things I didn’t want seen. I stepped back further into the darkness knowing my concerns were irrational but unable to tear my eyes off hers. I was stronger than this. I was thoughtful, pragmatic, and not a victim of animalistic natures and poetic fantasies.

Though she occasionally snapped the thin strips of material that made up her outfit in a playful tease she never took any clothes off. She didn’t need to. She’d managed to capture the attention of every person in that room with her movements alone.

My body reacted despite my rationale; heart pounding, skin aflame. I needed to leave. I wouldn’t be like the rest of these people.

The song crescendoed and in a show of strength, she launched herself back to the top of the pole once again. A small gasp escaped from me but the music drowned out all noise. She performed a trick that made her appear to fall down the entire length of the pole, tumbling over and sideways, limb over limb, only to catch herself at the bottom using only her thighs. She hung upside down, panting, dark hair sprawled out around her and her gaze set on me. Her eyes were a brilliant emerald, unlike any color I’d ever seen. They were luminescent in the stage lighting. Even across the hazy bar, they were transcendent. Glowing. Fixated on me.

Nobody else.

I swallowed but it wasn’t easy. The song ended and the lights went out. The crowd went wild. Several moments passed before I gained control of my faculties again. With that control came the shame of watching her. The understanding that just seeing her perform was enough to make me forget who I was. That couldn’t happen.

I got out of there as fast as I could. The entire drive back to Knoxville my chest heaved at an alarming rate; my body remained a mass of tension. Her hypnotic gaze flashed repeatedly in my vision no matter how often I tried to shake it loose.

Thankfully, I’d never see her again.

How do you know if a risk is worth taking? If you knew, there wouldn’t be any risk.
Following a disastrous appearance on a televised baking show, Sophie Copeland is certain things can’t get any worse. Enter Joel Barnes, a Green Valley mystery, wrapped in rumors, and a whispered connection to the local notorious biker gang. Joel’s got a name for being bad news, but he also has an apartment for rent.

Review: Prose Before Bros by Cathy Yardley

Title: Prose Before Bros
By: Cathy Yardley
My Copy: From Author
The BookWhisperer's Rating:

Nothing about being a librarian prepared Thuy Nguyen for such a wide variety of casseroles. Or life in a small town. Or becoming a farmer.

But what can she do when her catastrophe-prone best friend begs her for help? After all, Maddy has always been there for Thuy. It’s time to return the favor.

It’s simple really, all she has to do is: learn everything about farming ASAP, save her BBF’s family business from disaster, and avoid being caught staring at Maddy’s biker brother, and his muscles, and his smile, and his soulful, sexy eyes.

Oh yeah, and she should definitely not fall in love with him.

Easy, right? . . . Right.

I’m going to be honest and admit that I struggled with this book.  However, I will say that I want to applaud Cathy Yardley for bringing a new kind of lead woman to the forefront!  Thuy is not your average main character; an Asian woman who has a darker past than most, Masters in Library Science, and isn’t afraid of helping her best friend raise her new baby and run a farm and not know how to do any of it. Other than the above, that is all that I could praise Thuy for.  I found it hard to believe that she would be attracted to Maddy’s brother in any way, especially after finding out her background with her family.  She seemed a little lost in most of the book except for when she was at the library.

All - Thuy, Maddy, and Maddy’s brother, Drill just fell short in all occasions.  I struggled with how non-badass Drill truly was and how after meeting Thuy, he questioned everything about the gang that he was ‘loyal’ to. Drill went back and forth with his mindset of, “Should I do what is right or should I do what is wrong?” And, after making wrong choices, he was surprised that his gang turned on him.  Why in the world would he tell the gang’s President that he inherited half of the farm land, knowing that the gang was in financial trouble, and be surprised that they scheme to take the money.

Maddy was such a small character in this book but her very last action made me sigh.  I won’t go into it but I was hoping for something else, something better for her.

I wish I would have loved this book – I really do.

Review: Crime and Periodicals by Nora Everly

Title: Crime and Periodicals
By: Nora Everly
My Copy: Ebook from Author
The BookWhisperer's Rating:

In Green Valley, Tennessee everybody knows everybody, but nobody knows Sabrina Logan.

Sabrina has been hiding in plain sight for years. Living her life inside of books, dutifully helping her family, and hoping no one will notice her. So far? Mission accomplished!

Yet when sexy—and distrustful—sheriff, Wyatt Monroe returns to town with his daughters, he definitely notices the quiet librarian everyone else overlooks. The single dad can’t seem to shake thoughts of shy Sabrina. Without quite understanding the impulse, Wyatt makes his mission finding her again, so he can . . . well, he’ll just have to reckon with that later.

What Wyatt discovers is a woman who trusts too easily, but who’s afraid to live. Trust doesn’t come easily to Wyatt. But living? That’s never been a problem.

And he’d sure like to show her how.

Yay! The story of Sabrina and Wyatt and now I get to tell you how much I enjoyed them and everything else in the book.

Sabrina was a character that I could support.  She dealt with a lot of anxiety and extreme shyness but there is one thing she will fight for and it is her family! However, while fighting for her family, she runs into Wyatt, a sexy police officer of the fine town of Green Valley.  Sabrina’s shyness and beauty intrigues Wyatt and he makes it his personal duty to find out more about this town’s beauty.

I loved that Wyatt took his time getting to know Sabrina and letting her open to him on her time frame rather than his.  And, I loved how Wyatt’s two daughters willingly opened their hearts and acceptance to Harry, who also suffers in anxiety.  I think both Sabrina and Wyatt brought out the best of each other and their family.

I must admit that it seemed very easy for Sabrina to start breaking out of her shell once Wyatt was introduced into her life.  It kinda felt like Wyatt was what she needed to fix her, which didn’t seem right. I feel like in real life it wouldn’t have been that easy nor as quick for someone to grow that dramatically.  Sabrina spoke a lot about going to therapy, which I loved, but she never really attended a session in the book.  I will also say that I disliked the whole Michael plot.  I felt like that was inserted for more drama than an actual plotline for the readers.

Super cute addition into the Penny Reid’s Universe of magical characters!

Review: Stud Muffin by Jiffy Kate

Title: Stud Muffin
Author: Jiffy Kate
My Copy: ARC
The BookWhisperer's Rating:

It’s hard to get revenge without getting a rap sheet.

After Tempest Cassidy walks in on her husband banging her high school nemesis, her whole world gets turned upside down. She goes from being known as the Duchess of Muffins to the town crazy. Her new MO: revenge.
Eventually, Tempest grows weary being arrested. Yet what choice does she have? If she’s not angry, then she’s simply . . . sad.

Just as she decides to get her life back on track, in walks Cage Erickson, the new bouncer at the local strip club. He’s scary-handsome and the polar opposite of her ex. She’s attracted to him, but she’s not looking for a rebound. He’s attracted to her, but he’s not looking for a serious relationship. So, they agree to be friends.

But when lines get blurred in the friend zone, will they both get burned? Or will it be a TKO?

I’ll be honest and say that I was really looking forward to reading about Tempest and Cage and this friendship that grows into something more but this story just wasn’t what I thought it was going to be.

Tempest was a firecracker of a character but not in all the best ways.  Most of the time she was annoying and did not so smart things. I know how hard it can be to deal with anger but some of the ways she dealt with her anger was not the most mature ways.  They were ways that landed her in jail and it took her a while to learn her lesson.

Cage seemed like a decent character throughout the book.  He was levelheaded and interested in Tempest and took his time with her healing.  However, it felt like he had to save her a lot in the book. Anytime Mindy or Asher came around and a disaster was had, he was either right beside her or not to far away to help.  I just that women could save themselves.

I wish I could have really enjoyed this story more but I found things that just didn't settle well with me.

BookWhisperer Reviews: Fight by Molly McLain

Fight (Velocity, #2)Fight by Molly McLain
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Summary:
The story continues...

I trusted Colton with every bit of myself. I believed him when he promised he’d never hurt me. But he broke me…and now I watch him give another woman everything I thought would be mine.

I never saw this coming.

I don’t blame Taylor for the decisions she’s made, because I know the fault is all mine. I took her for granted. I broke her heart.

But she’s everything to me. If the guy holding her now thinks for one second I’ll lay down without a fight, he’s dead wrong.

Because I’m coming after what’s mine.

Yet again, I am so surprised by the small number of reviews on Molly McLain's Velocity series books. I immediately had to throw myself into this book at the tail end of finishing Fly. Colton and Taylor are in quite a sticky situation. Neither in an attempt to hurt the other is a story of actions and consequences. Thus far Colton has been living a life of the superstar, but with money and notoriety comes greedy people. Taylor and Colton are going to find their situation continuing to evolve, but it will be with their partnership that they will find a way to the other side. It is sad to see Taylor carry a much larger burden for the bulk of this story, but regardless of their peer's opinions, this is her nature and a decision that she makes all on her own. It is not for the greed of Colton that she has always ensured that she carried the weight for him at home, but rather her compelling personality to make sure that she keeps it all within herself to alleviate undue stress for Colton. What is more monumental in this story is the growth in Colton to interpret her natural tendencies and take the lead. Love was always enough for these two but in order to truly become the partnership that they both deserve someone willing to carry the weight of the relationship equally. This is the journey of that process and learning to navigate the bad in the world together. The perfection of Taylor and Colton's love is amazing. These two people are so desperately in love, and Fight is proof that they can overcome anything as long as they do it together.

BookWhisperer Review: Fly by Molly McLain

Fly (Velocity, #1)Fly by Molly McLain
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Summary:
Meet Colton Wade, FMX rider...

I’m just a small town guy who caught a lucky break. Now I’m living the dream, on the brink of high-flying super-stardom. But something’s missing.

That something is Taylor.

She’s my best friend. The one who makes me want to push harder and higher. The one I fall back on when shit gets tough. The one I’d give it all up for.

I’d do anything to protect her. To make her dreams come true too.

But a single night changes everything.

And now the one she needs protection from...is me.

Fly is light on the reviews on Goodreads, and I can't for the life of me understand why? This was my first experience with works by Molly McLain, and I was over the moon for this couple from the moment that it started. Colton has been following his dreams, but really never once left the small-town girl behind. While she has been carrying the weight of responsibility it is clear that this young woman is in love with her best friend, and that he shares the same sentiment. Fly carries emotions high with anticipation and expectation for the love that is so obviously under the surface for this couple. As the transitions being in their relationship the readers will soar on the high of their budding romance, but fall off a cliff hanger that will leave them desperate for more. There is no choice, but to continue through Flight so make sure that you have them both on hand.
