Review: Happy Trail by Daisy Prescott

Title: Happy Trail
By: Daisy Prescott
My Copy: ARC by author
The BookWhisperer's Rating:

A man of few words, Ranger Jay Daniels values the calm, quiet solitude of the Great Smoky Mountains. Never quite fitting in with either side of his family, he prefers the company of birds and tress to people.

Yeah, he'd most definitely prefer a bird--any bird, any bird at all, take a vulture for instance--to the human-tornado hybrid that just blew onto his peaceful stretch of the Appalachian Trail.

The path of true love never has run smooth for Olive Perry. After getting dumped and promptly abandoned in the middle of her multi-month hike, Olive swears off men. Determined to finish the long trek by herself, she doesn't need a prince--or broody and taciturn ranger--to save her.

Yet, when an early snowstorm threatens the mountains, and Ranger Daniels is charged with getting hikers to safety, that includes hot-tempered Olive Perry. Snowed in and forced to share an abandoned cabin, can Olive's heated intensity melt Jay's cool reserve?

And if so, will this happy trail lead to true love? Or will their time together be just another bump in the road?

There was so much I loved about this book but I will only highlight just a few things and let you all make your own decisions.

Olive and Jay were such solid and likeable characters that I found myself easily turning the pages and becoming more engrossed into their story.  They were who they are with no apologizes to anyone else and I liked that strongness.  I especially liked Olive’s no filter for half of the book.

One of the things I liked about this book is that they aren’t thrown together straight out of the gate; there are chapters of Jay and all of his “ranger-i-ness”, with nature and whatnot, and we get to learn who he is first before Olive is introduced to him.  Same with Olive, we learn about who she is, what she is been through, and how she grows on her own before she even meets Jay (I loved that!)  Then that magic moment happens when they meet and trek back to beat the storm. We get to witness their awkwardness together and their growing like for each other.

However, my favorite part was how Olive sent out the postcards to keep in touch.  It is such a small part of the story but it really touched my heart.

I think this is my favorite book out of the Smartypants universe so far!

Review: Code of Conduct by April White

Title: Code of Conduct
By: April White
My Copy: ARC from author
The BookWhisperer's Rating:

There are three things you need to know about Shane P.I.
1) P.I. is not her last name, it's her job title,
2) Her specialty is catching cheaters, and
3) She's a superhuman - kind of.

Gabriel is a security expert for Cipher Security, and a former UN Peacekeeper with a fierce protective streak that finds its focus on the beautiful P.I.

Their attraction is like an elephant in a room full of breakable things, and figuring out how to trust each other with their hearts, and maybe their lives, is the most fragile thing of all.

This Smartypants romance idea was just brilliant! I know I am only two books into the lot but I am loving every character and every story so far.

I’ll just lay it out, if you like Penny Reid’s writing and characters then you will like April White’s Code of Conduct.  A very strong and brilliant woman is your main character, Shane is her name, but oh, is she so guarded! A list of few friends and a whole lot of anti-trust surrounds her.  However, when she runs into the sexy Gabriel, her friend list grows just a smidge.

I think what I loved about Shane the most was that she flat-out is flawed. She admits it from the very beginning of the book.  Per her past, she has trust issues and her P.I. job is to catch cheaters.  I can’t imagine someone not having trust issues with a job of such.  J  But she grows significantly in this book and it was such a pleasure to read her do such.

And, friends, Gabriel is mega big cartoon eyes handsome and swoon-worthy!  Who he is, who his family is, how he slowly worms his way into Shane’s life but knows when he has to back off; he is the perfect specimen.
My favorite part is how our book characters wove in and out of Penny Reid’s universe and April White’s side characters.  It felt natural and full of ease.  No one felt out of place; it’s like they all belonged.

Review: Weight Expectations by M.E. Carter

Title: Weight Expectations
By: M.E. Carter
My Copy: ARC from Author
The BookWhisperer's Rating:

Rian Thompson thought she joined the gym to get healthy. Little did she know she was about to add hundred and ninety pounds of swoonworthy abdominal muscles and arrogance to her life.

Every day in Rians’s life follows a predictable pattern, and she wouldn’t have it any other way. She’s got a nice job, a nice place to live, and a nice family – even if they are a little wedding-zilla-ish at the moment.

She doesn’t need anything spectacular to be happy. She just needs to get healthy – mentally, physically. . . and maybe spiritually if that happens. But she’ll settle for two out of three until her sister finally gets hitched.

Carlos Davies thought his life was perfect. Little did he know it was about to be turned upside down by a woman who is not his type.

In Carlos’s mind, his life is damn near perfect. He’s got a great job, a great place to live, and a great stash of pick up lines that always work. It has occurred to him that maybe no one actually takes him all that seriously. But with these bulging biceps and thick, dark hair, does that even matter since he’s never sleeping alone?

Welcome to Weight Expectations, where great—and unexpected—things happen.
I thought that this synopsis sounded pretty good; how could a girl not love a story about a handsome man realizing that beauty is not just skin deep?  However, I struggled with Rian and Carlos throughout the whole book and I hate that I did!

I did like Rian’s character separately.  She had a good head on her shoulders, was smart, witty, fun, and was just trying to get through life the best way she could.  I can respect that; I’m the same way.  What really brought me down about her character was how she let people walk over her; mainly her sister, mother, co-worker (the guy), and herself.  She was quite pessimistic of who she was, always putting herself down and I found myself really wanting her to be a strong, confident character.

Carlos was hard for me to love.  I felt like there were some good chances for him to grow (and he did at the end) but getting there was rough.  He bounced back and forth between, “why is Rian so important in my head” to “Oh, look at gym girl, let’s take her home with me.”  I felt like Carlos was one dimensional and not multi-dimensional, which is how I like my book men. J  He was focused on his job, his body, his single life, focused on himself.  Yes, he grew into a man that could think more than just about himself but this growth happen in an instant.

About GIRL IN LUV:

Langley Vaughn is in desperate need of a date.

But not just any date.

She's looking for a date to the wedding from hell. It isn't every day you're forced to be in the bridal party while your first love marries your archnemesis…otherwise known as the world's worst stepsister. The entire situation is a nightmare, and Langley is sick and tired of taking orders and forcing a fake smile. She's done being the bad guy when she was the one who was wronged.

She needs to find a date who's not afraid of her family's money…someone willing to shake things up. She needs someone outside of her normal social circle, someone ready to go to war with the well-to-do. She needs someone who won't back down. Someone willing to play the complicated game of tug-of-war she's been engaged in with her family for years.

Never in a million years did she think she was going to stumble across her very own heroic heartthrob when she set her crazy plan in motion.

Not only does Iker show up for her time and time again, he also forces her to finally fight for herself.

He says he's only there for the money…but his actions speak so much louder than his words.

Iker Alvarez would do anything and everything to get his hands on some quick cash.

Not just any cash, but enough to make sure his younger brother gets into the college of his dreams.

Thank goodness for a desperate, pretty little rich girl with too much money and her heart set on an outrageous scheme. Being in the right place at the right time might just be the answer to both of their prayers—and this smart soldier has never let a golden opportunity slide by.

Iker doesn't mind coming to Langley's rescue and being her plus-one…as long as the price is right.

Only, he didn't plan on liking the blonde socialite as much as he does. He is totally unprepared for the pull he feels toward her, coupled with his growing desire to protect her from the vultures and villains living under the same roof.

He wants to be the guy who keeps her safe and gives her the courage she obviously needs to fight back… But someone else, someone far more powerful and influential than Langley's wealthy family, has dibs on Iker's time and on his future. He knows he isn't the guy Langley can count on in the long run, but damn, if he doesn't want to do everything in his power to be that man.

BOY IN LUV by Jay Crownover & Rebecca Yarros

About BOY IN LUV:

Distance sure as hell made his heart grow fonder… But it shattered hers into a million pieces.

Langley Vaughn knows she's never going to make the same mistake again.

Who falls head over heels in love in a week? Langley did, and she's regretted it every day since she handed her heart to a boy with too many secrets and too much baggage. Iker doesn't fit into Langley's world, and he made it clear he doesn't want to. He left before she even got a chance to try and change his mind or to prove to him how good they could be together. Langley's spent the last nine months healing her heart and making big plans for the future. Plans that absolutely don't include Iker… even though he's back, looking better than ever, and saying all the right things.

Iker Alvarez knows he made the biggest mistake of his life.

At first, the pretty blonde in the red dress was nothing more than a means to an end. But, she quickly became so much more. As soon as Iker walked away from Langley, claiming it was for her own good, he knew he screwed up. He left her so she wouldn't worry about him when he deployed, so she wouldn't waste her time waiting around for a guy who was never going to be good enough for her. Only, nine months and a deployment later, Iker still can't get Langley out of his head… and he totally underestimated the hold she has on his hardened heart. He's a guy who's not sure how love should work, or how to go about winning his girl back…he's about to get a crash course in both.

Review: Baking Me Crazy by Karla Sorensen

Title: Baking Me Crazy
Author: Karla Sorensen
My Copy: ARC
The BookWhisperer's Rating:

I'm Levi Buchanan, and until five years ago, I thought the legend of my family's curse was a load of crazy, Southern nonsense.

No curse can make you fall in love at first sight. No curse can force a true, deep, passionate, all-consuming love that will haunt you all the days of your life.

Then I met Jocelyn Abernathy and I realized how completely wrong I was.

The problem is, Jocelyn guards her feelings like well-armed soldier. She's the most beautiful, stubborn, infuriating woman I've ever met. Every time she talks, I want to kiss the living daylights out of her. But I can't.

Because when we met, she didn't need true love. She needed a best friend. And that's what I've been to her... for five years.

But when Jocelyn meets a handsome stranger her first day working at Donner Bakery and she lets him buy her a dill pickle cupcake, I realize with ominous regret that I may have missed my window with my best friend.

If I can't get her to see past our friendship, my new curse may be to watch the love of my life move on with someone else.

I love all things Penny Reid and I got a little nervous with the thought of other authors taking Penny’s universes and making them their own.  Penny has such a unique style of writing, characters, science facts, and jokes and I didn’t know if others could fulfill that kind of style.  However, Karla did it!  I don’t remember any random science facts but the characters were written wonderfully and in a style that I know Penny would approve of.

Levi had me at the very beginning and Joss wasn’t far behind.  But they aren’t the normal kind of couples that we run into while reading; Levi has a cursed family, immediate and eternal love for that one certain woman, Joss. And Joss is confined to a wheelchair and only wants to be friends. Nowhere in Joss’ mind is Levi anyone she dreams about but feelings start to shift and that is when our wonderful book starts to get interesting.  We spend a good chunk of the book just getting to know Levi and Joss, Levi’s love for Joss, and Joss’ blindness to it all, but when a third party comes in feelings get stirred.

I am going to be honest here and say I didn’t know how much I would enjoy a story about a hunky guy, his family curse, and a woman in a wheelchair.  At first, it didn’t sound like such a sexy story but I was surprisingly wrong.  It was well written and beautifully done.

I think Karla did a beautiful job with Penny’s universe (and also Karla’s universe.)  She had the perfect amount of style that meshed well with all the other characters and I found myself smiling throughout the whole book.

This book was the first in the crossing and I am excited to see where the others will take us!

About Karla Sorensen
Karla Sorensen has been an avid reader her entire life, preferring stories with a happily-ever-after over just about any other kind. And considering she has an entire line item in her budget for books, she realized it might just be cheaper to write her own stories. It doesn’t take much to keep her happy…a book, a really big glass of wine, and at least thirty minutes of complete silence every day. She still keeps her toes in the world of health care marketing, where she made her living pre-babies. Now she stays home, writing and mommy-ing full time (this translates to almost every day being a ‘pajama day’ at the Sorensen household…don’t judge). She lives in West Michigan with her husband, two exceptionally adorable sons and big, shaggy rescue dog.

BookWhisperer Review: Enticed by Ginger Voight

Enticed (Fullerton Family Saga, #1)Enticed by Ginger Voight
Fullerton Series Book 1

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Summary:
Rachel Dennehy had a crazy thought. If she could just start over somewhere else, she could forget about all the ghosts that chased her. When an email landed in her inbox, to tutor a difficult student whose father just happened to be a prominent businessman, the apple was a bit too enticing for Rachel to refuse. She moves to Beverly Hills, where she is tasked with turning around young Jonathan Fullerton’s bad attitude, one that stems directly from his parents’ ugly divorce and even uglier custody battle.

That Drew Fullerton is one of the handsomest and most eligible bachelors in the world means nothing to Rachel. Drew’s brother, Alex, however, assumes otherwise. This sets the two immediately at odds, though they both have young Jonathan’s best interest at heart. Unfortunately the more he tries to warn her away from Drew, the closer he ultimately propels her toward her charming boss.

Rachel stays solely to protect young Jonathan, trapping her into this sticky web despite her own history of loss and betrayal. How long will she last? More importantly, what will she be required to give to save these Fullerton men who continually tug her in three different directions?

I just got around to this little treasure! This has been my first experience with works by Ginger Voight, and she absolutely did not disappoint. This is such a spellbinding story that spoke to my heart. Everyone has scars from their journey through life, and this story captures several of those in one twisted tale. I was mesmerized by the connection between Jonathan and his teacher, and the rooting for the healing that they are are in desperate need of. Unfortunately, the dark and sinister world in which they live of the sophisticated and wealthy is not easy to overcome, and the dangers lurking around every corner are ruthless, to say the least. While trying to mend their broken roads it is gut-wrenching to see the extents at which one will go to come out on top. Their story carried me through various emotions that seemed like a never-ending whirlwind in which my own better judgment was lost and misguided. Leaving me, as a reader, unable to see the upcoming bends in the road and the wolf in sheep's clothing. Concluding on a cliff hanger that will leave readers with a resounding dedication that will require the continuation of this story in hope for the resolution to the unsettlement that will reside in their souls after discovering the lack of limits that one will take to win at all costs.
