To most people, princes, princesses, counts and dukes are found only in the pages of the most famous of fairytales. Crowns, priceless jewels and gilded thrones belong only in childhood dreams.
But for some, these frivolous fancies are truth.
For some, they are real life.
On Manhattan’s Upper East Side, people have always treated me as someone special. All because of my ancestral name and legacy. All because of a connection I share to our home country’s most important family of all.
I am Caresa Acardi, the Duchessa di Parma. A blue blood of Italy. I was born to marry well. And now the marriage date is set.
I am to marry into House Savona. The family that would have been the royals had Italy not abolished the monarchy in 1946. But to the aristocrats of my home, the abolition means nothing at all.
The Savonas still hold power where it counts most.
In our tight-knit world of money, status and masked balls, they are everything and more.
And I am soon to become one of them.
I am soon to become Prince Zeno Savona’s wife…
… or at least I was, until I met Achille.
And everything changed.

Caresa

As my papa’s G5 began its descent, I looked out of the window beside me and waited for the plane to break through the clouds. I held my breath, body tense, then suddenly the burnt-orange remnants of daylight flooded the plane, bathing the interior with a soft, golden glow. I inhaled deeply. Italia.
Fields and fields of green and yellow created a patchwork quilt below, rolling hills and crystal-blue lakes stretching as far the eye could see. I smiled as a sense of warmth ran through me.
It was the most beautiful place on earth.
Sitting back in my wide cream leather chair, I closed my eyes and tried to prepare myself for what was coming. I was flying to Florence airport, from where I would be swiftly taken to the Palazzo Savona estate just outside of the city.
I would meet Prince Zeno.
I had met him twice before—once when I was four, of which I had no memory, and again when I was ten. The interaction we’d had as children had been brief. If I was being honest, I had found Zeno to be arrogant and rude. He had been thirteen at the time and not at all interested in meeting a ten-year-old girl from America.
Neither of us had known at the time that that our betrothal had been agreed upon two years prior. It turned out that the trip my papa had taken to Umbria when I was eight was to secure a forever-bond between the Savonas and the Acardis. King Santo and my father had planned for their only children to marry. They were already joined in business; Zeno’s arranged marriage to me would also strengthen both families’ place in society.
I thought back on my New York farewell of nine hours ago and sighed. My parents had driven me to the private hangar and said their goodbyes. My mama cried—her only child was leaving her for a new life. My papa, although sad to see me go, beamed at me with the utmost pride. He had held me close and whispered, “I have never been more proud of you than I am right now, Caresa. Savona Wines’ stock has plummeted since Santo’s death. This union will reassure all the shareholders that our business is still strong. That we are still a stable company with Zeno at the helm.”
I had given him a tight smile and boarded the plane with a promise that they would see me before the wedding. And that had been that.
I was to marry Zeno, and I hadn’t protested even once. I imagined to most modern-day women living in New York, the process of arranged marriages sounded positively medieval, even barbaric. For a blue blood, it was simply a part of life.
King Santo Savona died two months ago. The shareholders of his many Italian vineyards, the stakeholders in Savona Wines, had expected his son, Zeno, to immediately step up and take charge. Instead, Zeno had plunged himself into the party scene even harder than before—and that was quite a feat. Within weeks my papa had flown out to Umbria to see what could be done.
The answer: our imminent union.

Review: Nico by Sarah Castillo

Title: Nico
By: Sarah Castille
My Copy: Netgalley.com
The BookWhisperer's Rating:

A dangerous proposal

Las Vegas Mafia boss, Nico Toscani, is used to getting what he wants, whether it is having the City of Sin under his rule or a beautiful woman in his bed. But when he meets his match in the gorgeous, headstrong Mia Cordano, the daughter of a rival crime lord, all bets are off. . .

Sexy computer hacker, Mia, struggles to break free of her ruthless father’s Mafia ties…but she can’t resist the powerful and seductive Nico, who will stop at nothing to possess her. With their families locked in a brutal war for control of the city, Mia and Nico enter into a forbidden game. Will they surrender to the passion that burns between them—and risk tearing apart their families? Or will Nico be forced to betray the only woman who sets his blood on fire?

A powerful and dangerous man who exudes sexiness – check! A beautiful and brilliant hacker who rejects her family’s life style and has paved away for herself – check!  A forbidden love – check! How can you pass up a forbidden love?

I really enjoyed both Nico and Mia’s characters throughout the book.  Both were born into mob life and while Nico accepts where he is and what his life was going to be, Mia rejects as much as she can but wrapped up in it enough so that she can stay alive and protect her younger sister.  While Nico is a bad ass, he still had a heart of gold, especially when it comes to Mia.  And while Mia rejects anything mob related in her life, she still stays in the family to protect her little sister.  These two’s family is at war but once Mia and Nico meet, war isn’t on their minds.  That forbidden love that I spoke of earlier, that is what they have and while they try to deny it at first, it magnifies each time they see each other.

Along with Mia and Nico, I found that I had a soft spot for one of Nico’s men that plays a bigger role in the book, as well as Mia’s sister.  I am hoping that the next book touches more on them.

I will say that the ending felt a little forced for a HEA.  It felt like we went through all this fighting and discovery only for Mia to fall apart when things got tough and Nico to turn away from a problem (the desert scene.  Now, don’t get me wrong, I am glad he did but I felt as if a mob boss would have had to carry through.)  So this book was good and had some good Mia and Nico moments but the ending dropped it down for a bit.

Review: If You Leave by Courtney Cole

If You Leave
By: Courtney Cole
Series: Beautifully Broken
My Copy: Ebook for Honest Review
BookWhisperer Rating:

26-year old Gabriel Vincent is a badass hero. Or he used to be, anyway. As an ex-Army Ranger, Gabe never thought he needed anyone. But after one horrible night in Afghanistan scars him in a way that he can't get past, he needs someone who can help him heal...even if he doesn't realize it.

25-year old Madison Hill doesn't need anybody...or so she thinks. She grew up watching her parents' messed-up abusive relationship and she knows there's no way in hell that she's ever letting that happen to her.

They don't know it in the beginning, but Gabriel and Madison will soon develop a weakness: Each other.

But Gabriel's got a secret, a hidden monster that he's afraid Maddy could never overcome... And Maddy's got issues that she's afraid Gabe will never understand. They quickly realize that they need each other to be whole, but at the same time they know that they've got demons to fight.

And the problem with demons is that they never die quietly.

I have greatly enjoyed every story from Courtney Cole. Here recently I read her post admitting that the start of this series was after her terrible experiences with her son and his own drug addiction. It is a truly horrible experience that she must have suffered, but it allowed her such a realistic depiction of the journey to overcome.  I wondered where this second story would go following one so raw and gritty, but Courtney never disappoints giving another display that will be offer another incredible story. Gabe is suffering from the effects of PTSD, and his story is one that soldiers experience everyday. Maddy had to grow up quickly, and has been living a life of responsibility for as long as she can remember. Between the two there are scars on each that have kept both of these characters from overcoming a haunting past. This is not a fun loving romance, but rather a tale of a romance that will defy all odds. It will offer the healing of not one, but two people, and a happily ever after that will give readers hope.

Release Launch: Twined Bond by Emma Hart

twined-banneravailablenow

twinedbond-final-ebooklg

All is well in Holly Woods.

My best friend's love triangle is now a happy little circle. My sister-in-law just gave birth to my gorgeous new niece who is the world's best cuddler, and Nonna's not on my back every ten minutes about the fact we're getting married in one month.

Supposedly.

Until the mayor's niece—our baker for the wedding—commits suicide. At least, that's what the note says. My gut says we're talking a different kind of 'cide.' My gut also says I should stay well away, and in the interest of Drake's sanity, I plan to.

But when life throws you an unexpected curveball... Sometimes the best laid plans need tearing up.

Even if you don't mean to do it.

Happily ever after...

If Holly Woods survives this.

(Twined Bond is the seventh and final book in the Holly Woods Files series, and picks up roughly)

“Tell that to my ovaries.”

“I think I did last night when I hugged Casey.” He winks at me.

I playfully shove his chest. “It made me think. That's all.” I slide my hand down his stomach and, in a small voice, say, “I think you'd be a great dad.”

He smiles, pressing his lips to mine. “And you'll be a great mom. When you figure out how to be an adult.”

I hit him again. Much harder this time.

He laughs, stepping back and moving to the coffee machine. “Stop getting your panties in a twist over every little detail, okay, babe? Take everything one step at a time and let me help you. Instead of freaking out in your office alone, call me.”

“What if you don't answer?”

He shrugs, hitting the button on the machine. “Leave me ranty messages and I'll come with cupcakes,” he says over the gurgling of the coffee spitting into his mug.

“And just like that, he makes me forget why I was ever worried about marrying him,” I tease.

He simply looks over his shoulder, smirks, and throws me a second wink.

And an idea flies through my head.

A crazy, stupid, ridiculous idea.

The moment the coffee machine stops, the kitchen fills with silence.

One that makes my idea buzz loudly.

“Drake.”

“Mhmm?” He turns around, still stirring sugar and cream into his coffee.

“What if we did it? Got married. Eloped but kinda didn't.”

“You're confusing me now, sweetheart.”

I'm confusing myself. But still... “We're registered, right? We both have each other’s rings in the safe in the closet. Why don't we just...do it?”

He stills, but his blue eyes swing from his mug to meet my brown gaze. “Are you suggesting we blow off the ceremony, grab our rings, and go see Father Luiz right now?”

Release Day: Say You're Mine by Jenika Snow

She was mine before I even knew her name…

Felix

When I first saw Maggie, I knew we’d be the best of friends. I wanted that desperately, wanted her in my life, and I’d do anything to make sure that happened.

Until Maggie came in my life I didn’t know what love was.

She’ll be my first and last.

I’ll be her only.

Maggie

I didn’t know I could have a friendship like the one I have with Felix. But the friend-zone wall has always been in place. Being too afraid to cross it, I’d rather be in Felix’s life than tarnish the relationship we have.

Too much time has past. I’m done being afraid of the what-ifs. I’m ready to admit how I feel for him, consequences or not.

Felix

Maggie doesn’t know the lengths I’ll go to keep her in my life, but she will, because the very idea of her with someone else is not something I’ll even entertain. She’s always been mine, and it’s time I step up and show her how much I love her.

My devotion for her goes to the very depths of my soul, and staying back as she lives her life without me by her side is absolutely not an option.

Warning: This story is so sweet it might give you a stomachache, but it will be worth it. Short, straight to the point, and drama-free, be prepared to fall in love with this devoted hero who will go to any lengths to make the woman he loves his. A safe, overly happy read that will have you wishing you had a Felix in your life.
