Review: Spaces Between Notes by Kristina M. Sanchez

Title: Spaces Between Notes
By: Kristina M. Sanchez
My Copy: Ebook from Author
The BookWhisperer's Rating:

Nikolai Amorosa is one of those men’s men. You know the type—allergic to feelings, couldn’t have a heartfelt discussion if he tried, which he never did. Then, he lost his voice, and any chance of communication went out the window.

Unable to speak or otherwise interact with anyone, Niko’s anger was off the charts. It could’ve been worse; he could’ve been in jail. Instead, he found himself doing construction on Carys Harper’s house. Carys talked—a lot—both with her voice and her hands. She was also at the beck and call of her deaf little brother, Benny, which drove Niko nine kinds of crazy. Not that he would’ve said anything, even if he could.

Something else that drove him crazy? Carys was stubborn. She wouldn’t let him wallow. More than that, she seemed to hear all the things he couldn’t say. She understood him like she understood music. She heard what existed in the spaces between notes. She knew that sometimes silence screams the loudest.

A friend recommended “Spaces Between Notes” to me because she had read past fanfiction that Kristina Sanchez has written and really enjoyed the world that she created.  Since one of the greatest things about book blogging is finding new authors and stories, I grabbed an ARC and started reading.

In all honestly, I thought that the story had a really solid base.  Niko can’t express his emotions verbally like he used to be able to do or how he wants to now so instead of talking about his anger, he goes violent on his old childhood home.  Before his steam runs out, during his episode, a woman, Carys, walks out and a deal is made between them that he will pay off the damages by fixing the house.  This sudden connection builds into friendship, teacher, and eventually much more.  So, it is a good, solid base of a story.

After finishing the book, I would say I had two major problems.  The first problem was the formatting of the ARC.  Normally, I don’t state if there are misspellings, random strings of numbers, or copy write information because I understand authors wanting to protect their work however, every chapter’s beginning was missing dialog.  I felt like I missed a lot of what was being said and what tone was being set with this design.  I don’t know if it was on purpose, it may not have been, but it was always hard to start a new chapter when I only received the last three words in the sentence.

The second thing was that none of the characters felt genuine to me.  All the secondary characters came and went throughout the story as they were needed.  Jamie, Niko’s best friend, would only be there when work was to be done or Niko needed a translator.  Micah, Niko’s little brother, showed up three-fourths through the book and played almost a big part but just kinda fizzled out at the end.  The other characters: Bennett, Del, etc walked in and out of the pages and it didn’t feel natural.  They brought their own baggage of problems but I never received closure for any of them.  And then there is Niko and Carys.  I liked them but I didn’t love them.  They would fight for each other but they would never fight for themselves. I don’t want to list why because I think it would spoil the story but if you read it, I think you will get what I mean.

While the story was good and had major potential, I just couldn’t really get behind it.  Yes, I feel bad for saying this.

Gabriel Delvin is three things: a problem, a liar and irresistible. Elijah Beasley’s known that for years. He knew before they slept together, and he knew when he walked away from Gabe, unwilling to put up with more lies. The problem is he keeps going back.

Elijah Beasley is three things: a cop, a f*cking problem, and Gabe’s. Gabriel Delvin’s known that for as long as he can remember. It’s why they fell into bed together, and why Gabriel stayed in Green County, when all sense said to get out.

But as the underbelly of crime in Green County comes boiling to the surface, Gabe is forced to chose between the man he’s always loved, and the family who never abandoned him.

Love has never been the problem, for these two.

It just might not be enough, this time…

Carrot Cake and Ugly Lies.

Read all of Elijah and Gabriel’s story in
Sweet Ugly Lies.

I make a cake for a man who may never show up.
That's the thing. The bitch of it all. I'm waiting. And he fucking knows it. And I can't make myself stop.
I texted him earlier, and got the standard response.
We need to talk.
Which I then ignored because whatever the fuck else we are, talking isn't something Elijah Beasley and I have ever done.
I see no reason to change that now.
The simple truth of it all--the one I sure as hell won't admit to my baby brother sitting drunk and picking at the chocolate cupcake he's holding, or Elijah or fuck, even Hazel--is that I miss him.
I miss Eli.
He's cooled things off between us, has hidden behind his sister and his fucking badge and I should let him.
Fuck, I know I should let him. Getting involved with Eli had only ever been a bad idea.
Doesn't mean I've ever considered walking away. Doesn't mean I don't want him. If anything, it makes the whole fucked up mess more tempting.
Aiden is humming morose questions into my shoulder and I kinda want to shove a cupcake in his face just to shut him up. There is a knock on the door and I sit up. I hadn't heard that ridiculous Roadrunner that Eli sometimes borrowed from Archer.
Maybe it was Colt, come to further screw over my brother.
And that was just an infuriating thought.
It's not though. Well. It is. But if Colt is standing there with wide worried eyes and a hopeful twist to his lips, so is Eli, his face blank and his big hands shoved into his pockets. Watching silently.
I hate him for his impassive stare. For the way he never seems affected by anything.
Well, except when I'm riding him and he's cursing and pouring filth down my ear like a fucking porn star.
I don't even look at him as Aiden takes Colt by the wrist and leads him away, and if my baby brother pulling a Marine around like a bad puppy isn't amusing, nothing is or ever will be.
I turn without looking at him. “I need coffee.”
Eli huffs a little, trailing me into the house. His fingers find my hips when he comes up behind me in the kitchen.
He's so fucking big. Six foot and some change, with shoulders so broad they make me itch to rake my fingers over them. To dig my nails in them while I fuck him and lick a path down between them.
I roll my hips, still in his hands, into his dick and he laughs. A strangled noise that tells me I'm getting to him.
“Didn't come here for sex, Gabe,” he says, his voice breathy and low against my skin. I shudder and he groans, pushing into me.
“Whatdya want then?”
“I want you to talk to me, Gabe,” he murmurs and I freeze.
Talk.
About those two days and those ice cold bastards. About being held by the twins and Hanna.
All the things I wish I could tell him and I can't. The words stick in my throat and I shake my head. I feel his huff of annoyance and I twist in his grip. “C’mon, Gigantor. Talking is overrated.” I smear a little frosting from his cake on my finger and lick it clean while he watched, his eyes going dark.
“You can't avoid this forever, Gabe.”
It's been almost three weeks since I fucked him. Since before I was kidnapped and Aiden arrived in my house and Eli started treating me like spun glass.
So fuck talking. I lick my finger clean and then grab him by the shaggy long hair that is just a little ridiculous and so fucking hot I can't stand it.
Use it to drag him down until I can kiss him and lick the taste of sugar and spice and pecans into his mouth.
And it works.
Because whatever else we are. Whatever fucked up ugly lies are between us.
This is true. This is our center.
He groans into my mouth and hitches me up, until my ass hits the counter and the cake pushes across it, smearing frosting as he fucks into mouth with long wet strokes of his tongue.
Tomorrow.
Tomorrow we’ll talk. And I'll lie to him. But tonight.
Tonight there is only this sweet truth.

A Note From N:
Gabe was never a planned character. He showed up in the first chapter of Dirty Sexy Secret, and made himself at home. He dug under my skin while I wrote Dirty Stolen Forever, this mischievous background character that was begging me to tell his story. I wasn’t going to. Remi was next. And I was so excited to share his story.
But.
Gabe was here first and patient. So here is. You can read a tiny bridge short story from Gabe’s POV now, and make sure to grab SWEET UGLY LIES on release day!

Review: Once Gone by Blake Pierce

Once Gone
By: Blake Pierce
Series: Riley Paige Mystery #1
My Copy: Ebook for Honest Review
BookWhisperer Rating:

Women are turning up dead in the rural outskirts of Virginia, killed in grotesque ways, and when the FBI is called in, they are stumped. A serial killer is out there, his frequency increasing, and they know there is only one agent good enough to crack this case: Special Agent Riley Paige.

Riley is on paid leave herself, recovering from her encounter with her last serial killer, and, fragile as she is, the FBI is reluctant to tap her brilliant mind. Yet Riley, needing to battle her own demons, comes on board, and her hunt leads her through the disturbing subculture of doll collectors, into the homes of broken families, and into the darkest canals of the killer’s mind. As Riley peels back the layers, she realizes she is up against a killer more twisted than she could have imagined. In a frantic race against time, she finds herself pushed to her limit, her job on the line, her own family in danger, and her fragile psyche collapsing.

Yet once Riley Paige takes on a case, she will not quit. It obsesses her, leading her to the darkest corners of her own mind, blurring the lines between hunter and hunted. After a series of unexpected twists, her instincts lead her to a shocking climax that even Riley could not have imagined.

A dark psychological thriller with heart-pounding suspense, ONCE GONE marks the debut of a riveting new series—and a beloved new character—that will leave you turning pages late into the night.

If you are looking for a story that will have you checking the windows and doors, Once Gone, will be right up your alley. FBI agent, Riley Paige, has a slightly alarming ability to project herself into the mind of a killer. Not literally of course, but her terrifyingly accurate understanding is quite possibility the only opportunity the FBI will have in saving lives from the gruesome and heinous acts of one deranged madman. Unfortunately, Riley herself is trying to overcome the damage from the last case where she found herself in the clutches of a different dark and twisted individual. In the wrong place at the wrong time Riley finds herself with a front row seat to the first hand experience of these dark and heinous acts. With only her deep seeded desire to protect she is struggling through the constant onslaught of flashbacks and triggers that return her to those dark moments. With a murder that is quite obviously trying to tell a story; FBI are struggling to discern the man's motives and message that will lead them to this culpit. With Riley's uncanny ability she is tasked with deciphering this monsters true intentions. With her current mental state Riley will struggle to overcome her own fears, and follow her instincts that could possibly lead her within another vile man's reach. This was a thriller, and I was on the edge of my seat for the duration. Riley has a very unique ability, but unfortunately it leads her directly into the center of the lions den. I have been on a hiatus of mysteries as of late, and this is a great one. Once Gone carries a bit of two story lines throughout, and it is that second story that will allow for the drive to continue the series. I am anxious to see what the future of the Riley Paige series will offer.

Review: Hunter/Prey by Sam Sisavath

Hunter/Prey
By: Sam Sisavath
My Copy: Ebook for Honest Review
BookWhisperer Rating:

REVENGE MEANS CARRYING A LOADED SHOTGUN.

She has been planning this for ten years. She’s thought of everything and trained for this one single night. Nothing could possibly go wrong.

He’s a serial killer who has eluded the police for the last ten years. When his latest victim turns out to not be who she appears, the hunter will discover what it’s like to be the prey.

When these two very determined foes clash, there will be blood. One way or another, only one of them is coming out of this alive…

Hunter/Prey is a vicious thriller that will drag into the depth with a mad man. Allie Krycek made her decision long ago to find the true identity of the highway killer, and bring him to her own version of justice. After the brutal killing of her younger sister, Allie was desperate to make sure that this killing stops. Six year of training and three years of preparing for this moment has brought them to this moment. The moment that she will protect other woman from the same fate as her sister, as well as, get revenge for the unnecessary killing of her beloved young sister, that was taken from this world before her time.  This was a carefully crafted story to keep it realistic, but yet allow the upper hand to volley back and forth with Allie and Beckard. It is questionable just how this story was going to turn out, and at no point would I have considered any part of this story to be predictable.  The suspense was so powerful that it kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end root for this young woman to accomplish her valiant mission. I loved the writing style that shows no fear, and will take you through every gruesome moment of this game of cat and mouse without losing integrity of the story line. The story is a short one, but I am utterly amazed at how much was packed into every page. Sam Sisavath has successfully impressed me with her display in Hunter/Prey. In my research about this book prior to review I stumbled across more books in this series.  After this experience it will be a certainty that followers can expect to see more of the Allie Krycek series here.

About Penny Reid

SEX! It all started with sex, between my parents. Personally I don’t like thinking about it, but whatever works for you is a-ok with me. No judgment. The sex happened in California and much of my life also occurred in that state until I moved from the land of nuts (almonds), wine, silicon… boobs, and heavy traffic to the southeast US. Like most writers I like to write, but let’s get back to sex. Eventually I married and gave birth to 2 small people-children (boy-6, girl-4 as of this writing).

By day I’m a biomedical researcher with focus on rare diseases. By night I’m a knitter, sewer, lino block carver, fabric printer, soap maker, and general crafter. By the wee hours of the morning or when I’m intoxicated I love to listen to the voices in my head and let them tell me stories. I hope you enjoy their stories.

Review: Thief of Hearts by L.H. Cosway

Review: Thief of Hearts
By: L.H. Conway
Series: Hearts #5
My Copy: Ebook from Publisher
The BookWhisperer's Rating:

Seduce the teacher.
Meet the cousin.
Make a deal.
Steal the painting.

Andrea Anderson has no clue of the thoughts churning around in the dark and dangerous ex-con’s head as he enters her classroom. In fact, she’s momentarily lost for words. Not in her entire teaching career has she had a student who looked quite like Stu Cross.

A widow at just twenty-eight, love is something Andie hasn’t considered a part of her life for a very long time. However, when lingering touches turn to whispered words and hot, searching stares, she begins to wonder if maybe she should take a leap of faith.

But Stu is in her class for a reason, and it has nothing to do with love. He’s there to burrow his way into her life and repay a debt, otherwise his family will suffer. Andie is the first person to show him true kindness since he left prison, and though he doesn’t want to mislead her, he doesn’t have another choice.

Before long, Stu can’t tell whether or not he’s acting anymore, and his feelings for Andie could throw all of his carefully crafted plans into complete and utter disarray.

This is my first full novel by L.H. Cosway, the other ones were co-written with Penny Reid, and I can already tell that Cosway is going to be one of my favorites.  Thief of Hearts is a stand-alone but would probably be best if you read the series first.  I didn’t and was never confused but I could see how it might help with some of the secondary characters.

Andi is quite possibly the best person ever.  Her past, her present, her future dreams makes her into this wonderful woman who lives with her eccentric cousin and a teacher of adults.  Her job brings Stu into her life and while I don’t want to give anything away, Cosway crafts it into a wonderful story of family ties, thievery, and love.

Both Stu and Andrea were wonderful characters; both well-rounded in their own ways with good hearts (although sometimes Stu had me guessing.)  Their story was thought out and brilliantly crafted to wrap the reader up in their world and hold them there until the last word.  There were also wonderful secondary characters that played major parts, one of my favorites being Alfie (sweet Alfie.) The twist and turns and surprise ending kept me intrigued and just from this book, I know that I now have to start the series and basically read all of Cosways’ books.

You should definitely read this book if you like the series and you should definitely read this book if you have never heard of L.H. Cosway.  I have a feeling that she will be one of your favorite authors soon.

Review: Gathering Water by Regan Claire

Gathering Water
By: Regan Claire
Series: Gathering Water #1
My Copy: Ebook for Honest Review
BookWhisperer Rating:
Della Doe Deare isn't like most people. Most people begin their life on the day they enter the world; the day they're born. Della, well, hers began on the day she turned eighteen. After all, it was the day she first heard her real name, and that of her mothers. With nothing but a couple of duffel bags and a folder full of questions, she travels home to coastal North Carolina to claim the house she inherited from a grandmother she never knew. She has two goals: discover why her mother ran away from home all those years ago, and avoid the family that had left her to rot in an inept foster care system. Hard to do when the family she's been trying to avoid is dragging her into an unimaginable world... a world on the brink of war, and both sides want her dead. All Della ever wanted was to know who she was, but the journey to self-discovery might just lead to her destruction.
A great start here! Gathering Water is a very unique supernatural story. Unlike any that I have encountered in the genre. These characters have special ability to "gather" and "temper" energies that they pull from the natural elements. This is just a fancy way of saying they can pull from the four elements, and expel it through their own magical abilities. Honestly, that was an exceptionally creative talent to build a new series. Couple this with the additional new species that debut here, and we have an ingenious opportunity for a new series of adventures. That is exactly what I had the pleasure of experiencing here. This young woman that has spent her life in the system has only been looking for the day she will be responsible for herself. An unexpected meeting lands her on the opposite side of the US looking at what remains from her unknown Mother's life. What she finds is far from what she had ever expected, and against her own resistance she finds herself absorbed in a family that she believes she has no desire to be a part of. Only I believe that this is far from the truth. The relations that are slowly building between Dove, Cash, and Della is very heartwarming. While they are both very different relations building these three have devotion and loyalty at the very root. The developments of Gathering Water were quite the cliffhanger, and I am anxious to see where Della and her powers will go. This was an excellent debut for the series, and crafty twist to for the supernatural genre.
