Blurb
Carina Painter lives a life she created in between the pages of her bestselling novel. At least, that’s what she outwardly portrays. A heart-rending childhood followed by an abusive engagement leaves her broken in all ways possible. A chance encounter provides the fork in the road she so desperately desires.

Navy SEAL Smith Eppington is fighting the war of his lifetime. One that isn’t fought with weapons and highly sought intelligence. It’s a battle to remember his past. The accident that scarred seventy five percent of his body, and stole the life of his best friend also seized parts and pieces of his memory. When an author asks to interview him for a fiction novel, he’s ready to pour his heart out no matter the cost.

The friendship that blossoms between Smith and Carina is something extraordinary. It’s a living, breathing love story about finding yourself, change that is out of your control, grasping what you can, and letting go of everything else.

In a twist of kismet, remembering could destroy everything, but fiction may be what saves the day. A friendship built on new truths and a relationship torn apart by old lies collide in a poignant novel by International Bestselling Author, Rachel Robinson.

Review: Broken God by Nazarea Andrews

Title: Broken God
By: Nazarea Andrews
My Copy: Ebook from Publisher
The BookWhisperer's Rating:

Power is a strange and broken thing.

He was the sun god, the god of healing and song.
And prophecy.
Apollo has lived alone for centuries, content to spin out the years wandering a new and strange world, lost in the past and endless versions of the future. He has cut all ties with the remains of Olympus and his power, and hidden himself in humanity.
His twin thinks he’s depressed, spending his time in coffee shops, hospital waiting rooms, and concert halls…and nothing matters. Not really.
Until her.
Iris. With her teasing mouth and soulful music and eyes that remind him of the past.
He can’t resist her smile.
A girl as wild as he was, once, with a poet’s tongue and the body of a siren, who for one night makes him forget all the years and everything he gave up.
And he can’t stop fate.
Gods knows he’s tried.
He can’t help taking her.
Even if he knows better.
When Iris wakes up screaming, caught up in visions of the future, Apollo realizes that he didn’t leave his power quite as far behind as he thought.
He’s the god of prophecy and he’s been running from it, for centuries.
Iris is everything he has to avoid.
Now he has a furious Oracle on his hands, his sister trying to fix him, and someone is killing the gods.
It’s not just his tenuous sanity that hangs in the balance this time.
It’s all of Olympus.
Godhood really wasn’t supposed to be this hard.

What I will always state when reviewing Nazarea Andrew’s books…is that I ADORE her!  Every book that she has, I have been swept away in.  N has an amazing ability to take our common world and twist into an amazing, almost unrecognizable existence.  Like I said, I adore her! And I really adored Broken God.  N wrote such a unique take on the gods of Olympus, Apollo, and death ultimate of the Olympians.

Apollo is broken.  Not only the god of the sun but also prophecy, he took back his powers from Del a long time ago when she saw the fall of the Olympians.  He spends the first part of the book in and out of sanity, spitting out prophecies to anyone around him and trying his best not to let the three sister’s woven future come true.

N’s version of Apollo is the best that I have read.  He isn’t as arrogant as history tells us. His love for his sister is touching.  Most gods didn’t depend on each other but in this case, Apollo and Artie looked out for each other.  It gave Apollo a more human characteristic and set him apart from all the others. It was nice reading about a god who didn’t want to control the mortals but just wanted to live amongst them and soak up their songs.

The one character that I just couldn’t back was Iris.  It might be a shock to some but she and I didn’t click.  I didn’t see what she possessed that drew Apollo into her web.  Nor did I like her once their lives were entangled with each other.   And I can’t put my finger on it.  Maybe it was because she wasn’t like his other Dels that N spoiled me with.  Maybe it was because she seemed so distance…I just don’t know and it is driving me mad.

But all that aside, Broken God is a dashing story.  In true N fashion, it is more about the story behind the characters than it is a romance story (although there is a sprinkling of romance.)  A reimagined world, with ancient gods living among mortals and waiting for their death.

Review: Deathless & Divided by Bethany-Kris

Deathless & Divided
By: Bethany-Kris
My Copy: Ebook for Honest Review
BookWhisperer Rating:
Lies and love. This is how a war starts.

A life for a life. That’s the mafia way. Damian Rossi owes his life to a man who is ready to collect. That payment comes in the form of an arranged marriage to the daughter of another leading family in the Chicago Outfit. He’s ready to follow through, even if that means making sure Lily knows she’s his.

Lily DeLuca isn’t being given a choice. Forced home to marry a man she doesn’t know and back into a life she’d rather forget, her world is full of half-truths, buried pain, and uncertainty. But Damian is nothing like she expects. His motives aren’t clear. Her beliefs are being tested.

When it comes to this world, no man can be trusted. Someone is ready to flip the Chicago Outfit on its side all for the promise of something better. But no one runs a clean game and these men play for keeps. When blood begins to paint Chicago red, four families will be divided by loyalty, hatred, and revenge. There is no hiding. There is no safety.

No one is deathless.

No one.

Oh how I love me so Mafia books! Most every Mafia story offers gritty and raw read that will have readers desperate for more. Deathless & Divided is one of the best I have read as of late. Told by alternating pov's Lily a mafia princess and Damian the up and coming ruthless made man are the kind of intense and all consuming love story that romance lovers will devour. Damian, aka the ghost, is the dangerous of even the crime syndicate world. Nicknamed "the ghost" for his ability to get in and out unnoticed and unsuspected makes him fatal to even his own la familia. Lily has a scarred and damaged past at the hands of this world, and for the past two years she has evaded everyone and everything that represents this world. She has even conned herself into believing that she has found a way to escape. When her eldest brother Dino calls her home it is for his own agenda, and she quickly learns that she never had a chance to leave this world so easily. Within days she finds herself in the middle of a deadly game between mafia family, and engaged to the most dangerous man of them all. Although, quickly her own curiosity betrays her, and she finds herself drawn more and more to everything about him. Can he be deadly, and a good man??? Will Lily spend the rest of her days married to a man she can never love???? This was the question throughout D&D where one wrong step in this precarious world ends up with a unwanted visitor and an untimely end. Be aware that this is very much an erotica novel with very detailed content. I am very selective with such novels as it is not really what I am looking for. It is necessary for the story to have an overwhelmingly compelling story to equal the sexual content to have a well balanced story line. This was just that! D&D will knockout your socks off with the suspense of the story all the while making you hot under the collar.

Exclusive Excerpt:
My back was against the ground and he crouched on his knees beside me.  “We’re going to have to reenact this, and like I said, if you have a problem with any part of it, stop me immediately.”
“Okay,” I whimpered looking up at him, his face hovering above mine.  His hand reached over to my legs, motioning me to open them.  He took his position between me, his arms propping him up as his face remained free of emotion.
My heart rate climbed significantly as I felt his crotch lean right up against mine.  Holy shit, the fabric between us was way too thin, and I could feel every single inch of him.  I bit my bottom lip as his eyes met mine.  “You haven’t even taken me out to dinner yet and I’m already under you.”
I laughed at my own joke, not because I thought I was hilarious, but because he was making me edgy.  He was unyielding in his visage, so serious and intimidating.  “Wrap your legs around me tightly.”  He grabbed at my thighs and hoisted my legs up higher.  “Lock your ankles at my back.”
I easily obeyed, and my body shuddered against him as he clenched my arm and wrapped it around his neck.  “Closeness at this point will be your friend.  One arm will be around my neck and the other at my arm.”  He buried his face at my shoulder and instead of scaring me the way it should have, I found it hot, sexy, and a turn on.  I could feel him all over me the way I had pictured, and felt like this whole situation was a bit messed up.  I was supposed to be fighting an attacker, not thinking about the ways I wanted him to ravish me.
“Now, I want your hand that’s holding my arm to reach toward the hem of my shirt and lift it up toward my neck.  Understand?”
Oh, I understood.  He was asking me to undress him, and this was supposed to be self-defense?  “Um, how is this going to protect me?”
“Trust me.”  He glanced up at me, our bodies tangled like a pretzel.  He guided me toward each step, showing me how to choke him, put my foot on his hip, keep my face close to his neck so he couldn’t use his hands to punch me, and then eventually pull myself away.  We tried the move several times.  At first slow, as he walked me through each step, reminding me of how easy it could be for him to pull away and win.  My moves were shaky, but with each go I found myself getting more confident.
After at least half an hour practicing the routine over and over, I finally got it down.  We tried one last go and instead of pushing away I stayed in place, feeling his humid breath on my neck as I held him down.  He pulled away to look at me, his pupils dilating as his body wriggled on top of me.  “You aren’t towing through this one, Red.  What’s wrong?”
We both paused, our breathing labored.  I licked my lips, loosened my grip on his shirt as my eyes hooded with lust.  I could feel his body twitch against me and I whimpered as my hips instinctively lifted, rubbing against him with the sweetest ache.  His skin was hot to the touch, and I was drowning in a sea of dark blue.
The sweetest groan from him made me senseless as it rang in my ears.  His fingertips trailed my lips as he rested on top of me, the both of us locked in each other’s embrace.  Foreheads touching, we were so close, extremely close, to achieving a goal I never knew I had wanted so badly.  Our lips hadn’t even glazed over each other when he inhaled and lifted himself off of my body with a jolt.
He cleared his throat as he shifted his shirt down, trying to smooth it over his chest.  “That’s enough for today.  We can continue this another time.”

Excerpt:
There are a few things that will never change, despite everything else that has.
When I call, my sister will come.
Always.
It is the unshakable truth that my entire world is built on, from my first memories to this day. So when I piece it together, I don’t think.
I slide my phone out, even in the hospital room while Iris murmurs at her brother and Heath eyes me like I might break her.
Stupid boy. I already have.
I text her and slide the phone away. I don’t need to watch to know she’ll answer, any more than I need the answer to know she’ll be at my apartment when we return.
This is Artemis, who has made a life of taking care of me and worrying about me.
I listen to Heath and Lily talk around Iris, listen to her increasingly fragmented babble, and when Heath sends Lily a confused look, I intervene. Catch her hand and let a thin trickle of power seep from me to her. “We had a very long day, and she didn’t sleep well. I think I should probably take her home and let her get some rest. Do you mind?”
Heath does. I can tell, the way he’s bristling but Iris slumps into me and yawns, impressively, backing up every lie I’m spinning.
“I’ll be back tomorrow, ok? You just. You rest. I’ll be back tomorrow.”
She’s still looking over her shoulder when I pull her from the room.
Her eyes are wide and serious when we duck into a stairwell. "What happened to him?" she asks. Staring at me like I might give her answers. Like she has the right to demand answers from me.
Smart girl.
I tuck her hair back, behind her ears and ignore the low growl of warning it earns me. "If I promise to tell you when we reach my apartment. Will you trust me a little bit longer, sweetheart?"
Her eyes narrow. "Last time we got to your apartment, you and I didn't do much in the way of talking."
I grin at that. Because. Fair point.

Review: Furious Rush by S.C. Stephens

Furious Rush
By: S.C. Stephens
My Copy: Ebook from Netgalley
BookWhisperer Rating:
3 Stars

The first book in a new series by the #1 bestselling author of the Thoughtless novels...

Mackenzie Cox has a lot to prove. Daughter of a racing legend, she is eager to show the world that she has inherited her father's talent in the male-dominated sport of professional motorcycle racing. The last thing Kenzie needs is to be antagonized by her rival team's newest rider, Hayden Hayes. Plucked from the world of illegal street racing, Hayden immediately gets under Kenzie's skin. His insinuations that Kenzie is a spoiled princess who was handed her career fuels her desire to win, and much to her surprise, Kenzie soon learns she performs better when she's racing against Hayden.

As Kenzie and Hayden push each other on the track, the electric energy between them off the track shifts into an intense--and strictly forbidden--attraction. The only rule between their two ultra-competitive teams is zero contact. Kenzie always does her best to play by the rules, but when her team slips into a financial crisis, she has no choice but to turn to Hayden for help. The tension simmers during their secret, late-night rendezvous, but Kenzie has too much to lose to give in to her desires. Especially when she begins to doubt that Hayden has completely left his street life behind...

Furious Rush by S.C. Stephens was a title that I have been anxiously awaiting. After the power house novels in the Thoughtless series I figured this was sure to be another raw and gritty romance. From the start Mackenzie was a character I would normally relate. One of three daughters to the world famous Cox motorcycle legend, Kenzie was the only daughter that carried on this dedicated adoration for the racing world. Hayden is the atypical bad boy that stands for everything dangerous and forbidden in Mackenzie's world. She is drawn to this firecracker, and regardless of the consequences can't seem to stay away. While Furious Rush had moments of suspense and turmoil I was not exceptionally intrigued by this story in the same fashion that I expected after the debut series. I would have loved to find myself overwhelmed with compassion throughout this story, but what I discovered was a story that just fell a bit sort of my expectations.
