Excerpt

Someone—was it Melvin?—catcalled as Reece led me down the hall, and my cheeks flushed. “Okay, heman, I can walk all by my little self.”
He cast a look over his shoulder at me as he opened the office door. “I’m sure you can.”
Then he pulled me inside.
My gaze flipped to the roses—the roses!—but before I could say a word, he closed the door and my back was pressed against it, his hands planted on either side of my head and his face right in mine. Like right there, within kissing distance.
Wow.
“So, I was at my father’s place in New Jersey most of the day, and you know, he lives out near the Pine Barrens, so service is shit.”
I nodded even though I really wasn’t processing what he was saying as I was too busy staring at his mouth. Those lips, fuller on the bottom, drove me to distraction.
“I pull out of his driveway and I have all these messages from Dennis,” he continued, and I finally caught on to what he was talking about. “I honestly thought he was messing with me at first.”
I cringed. “He . . . um, he wasn’t.”
He shot me a bland look. “That much I figured out.” His hands slid on the door, stopping just shy of touching my shoulders. “What did he do to you?”
“What?” I blinked.
“What did that bastard do to make you throw a book through his windshield?”
Oh. Oh. My heart was now wiggling along with my stomach. “He really didn’t do anything. I just lost my cool. He wanted to talk to me, and I didn’t want to talk to him.”
“You don’t have to talk to him.”
“That’s what Dennis said, but I shouldn’t have damaged his car.”
A muscle flexed along his right jaw. “That’s true.” He shook his head. “Damn, Roxy, can’t say I’m surprised.”
My brows flew up. “You’re not?”
He laughed under his breath. “Babe, you’ve always had a hell of a temper on you.”
Ah, that was kind of true. “Is that a good thing or a bad thing?”
Reece cocked his head to the side. “A sexy thing, but vandalism and destruction of property doesn’t look good on you, sweets.”
“No. It doesn’t match my manicure.” I raised my hands, flashing him the blue nails.
He laughed again and then he sobered up, just like that. Cop Face was on, and yeah . . . the low coiling in my stomach told me I found Cop Face arousing. “You’re lucky. He could’ve pressed charges, and this conversation would be going in a whole different direction.”
My own half smile slipped off my face. “I know. It’s . . . I was just with Charlie, and he’s . . .” Unable to continue, I forced a casual shrug I didn’t feel. “What are you going to do with me?”
His lips parted as his chest rose with a deep breath, then his gaze dropped to my mouth, and his expression tightened. He looked . . . he looked hungry. “I have lots of ideas.”

Review: Officer Next Door by Ranae Rose

Title: Officer Next Door
By: Ranae Rose
Series: Lock and Key #1
My Copy: Amazon.com
The BookWhisperer's Rating: 3.5

How can anyone resist temptation when it’s right next door?

Riley County North Carolina has a lot to offer: coastal views as far as the eye can see, and men in uniform who are even more gorgeous. Home to the most notorious prison in the state, Alicia’s new hometown is crawling with men who carry their own handcuffs and know how to use them – like Officer Liam Alexander, her one and only neighbor. After catching him out of uniform, she can’t resist pausing to enjoy the show. When Liam’s Southern charm drives him across the property line, life gets hotter than the Carolina summer could possibly account for. Unfortunately, there’s a dark side to life in the coastal haven, even with an officer next door.

Coordinating special events at a historic – and supposedly haunted – plantation is enough to have Alicia questioning her senses and her sanity, but the spirits of the past take a backseat to a pair of escaped convicts who blaze a trail of mayhem across Riley County. Not even the most intense chemistry can survive the perils that make a sunny seaside town a dangerous place to be after dark … can it?

I was pleasantly surprised by the story that from Liam and Alicia.  I guess I thought that this book would have more of a ghostly element to it than what was presented.  I mean, it did have some hauntly measures added for some fun of it but this book was mostly about Liam and Alicia’s attraction to each other and two escaped prisoners from the state prison that Liam works for.

This brought more of a dangerous plot than I expected and turned the tables pretty quickly in my eyes.  Once these two prisoners escape from the transfer bus, Liam invites Alicia to stay with him so that she will be protected and then that is when the story takes off.

I am excited to see what else this series holds.  Alicia’s two friends met Liam’s two friends in this book and it looks like more love and possible dangerous situation are in store for this group.

She soon discovers she also must focus on winning the heart of a handsome firefighter who understands down to his soul the beautiful heiress who lives across the street is used to a life he cannot provide.

I thought before I started writing this review that I would do a little experiment and count how many KA books I have read in the last few years and the number is…..33.  Thirty-three books by KA have swooped in and stole my heart.  Every one of them I have loved.  Every one of them has been a ball of fantastic rolled up in absolute wonderfulness.

Let’s just say that Soaring fell into the category of the last thirty-three books of KA’s that I have read.  It was amazing.  It was actually beyond amazing because Amelia and Mickey were the best of everything together.  When Amelia’s ex-husband comes and stirs up trouble within the first few days of her moving into the new house, Mickey is there and steps in…making him the best neighbor (and super sexy!)  The moment they got together, they were the best lovers and this doesn’t even begin to describe them accurately.  They topped every emotion and level together and went beyond.

What I loved the most about these two characters was that the relationship was a slow build.  It wasn’t like those books where the instant they saw each other it become love.  Amelia and Mickey’s paths crossed multiple times, and in many different emotions, before they realized what these feelings were.  It was a beautiful build of a relationship and it burn of it was spellbinding.

Next Page Review: The Dark Light by Sarah Walsh

Title: The Dark Light

BookWhisperer Rating:

Mia is torn between two guys and two worlds in this epic, romantic fantasy.

Mysterious lights have flickered above Crownsville for as long as Mia can remember. And as far as she's concerned, that's about the only interesting thing to happen in her small town.
That is, until Sol arrives. Mia's not one to fall for just any guy, but she can't get Sol or the brilliant tattoo on his back out of her mind.
Then Mia's brother goes missing, and Mia's convinced that Sol knows more than he's sharing. But getting closer to Sol means reevaluating everything Mia once believed to be true. Because Sol's not who Mia thought he was and neither is she.

This was the highlight to my Spring Break. The Dark Light takes place in a little town call Crownsville. This is the described as the most boring town known to man according to the characters. Or atleast until five kids go missing, and a new guy named Sol appears out of nowhere. Things continue to ramp up when her own younger brother goes missing, and Mia just might be the only person that can find him and the other missing kids. Everything is not what it seems in this book, and you will be engrossed in every twist and turn.

Next Page Review: What Waits in the Woods by Kieran Scott

Title: What Waits in the Woods

BookWhisperer Rating:

It's a beautiful, sunny day. Callie Velasquez holds hands with her boyfriend Jeremy as they follow Callie's new BFFs Penelope and Lissa up the trail. The four friends are embarking on a camping trip -- a trip that immediately goes awry. They lose their way on the trail, and encounter a charismatic stranger with questionable motives. And when Callie stumbles upon a dead body, it becomes clear that the danger that lies in the woods is deadlier than she could have ever imagined. Tensions mount and friendships are tested as these teenagers try to survive the most sinister of circumstances.
The Next Page is our youngest reviewer, and dedicated to the reviews for middle school young adult stories. What Waits in the Woods was a very riveting story. A psycho, a knife, and a whole lot of woods is the basis of this story line. Callie was looking for an exciting trip with friends, but what she finds was beyond her wildest dreams. This is a story about finding what really makes people tick, and how much we really know those we call friends. This is a thrilling and suspenseful story that carried my attention from beginning to end.

Review: City in Embers by Stacey Marie Brown

Title: City in Embers
By: Stacey Marie Brown
Series: Collectors #1
My Copy: Ebook for Honest Review
BookWhisperer Rating:

Zoey Daniels has been tossed from foster home to foster home, where she grows up fast and tough. When she is placed in her “last-chance” home, she finds a reason to stay and turn her life around: her foster sister, Lexie, who is paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. Zoey will do anything to keep her safe. After high school, Zoey is hired by a special government agency, the Department of Molecular Genetics (DMG), where she meets the other reason to remain: Daniel, her co-worker. The man she loves.

But there is something unique about Zoey. She can see fae. Because of this, the DMG hires her to work as a Collector: catching, researching, testing, and using the fae to save human lives. The work never registers on her sympathy radar. She was raised to think of fae as beasts that feed on humans and want to destroy them.

When devastation hits Seattle, Zoey's whole world is turned upside down. The electric storm connects her to a ruthless fae, a Wanderer named Ryker, whose dealings expose them to even more trouble and danger. They embark on a journey, running and hiding from both the government and fae, both of which threaten their lives and those they love.

City in Embers will be that book of 2015 to which I compare all others. This is a debut novel for The Collector's series that can be shortly summarized in a paranormal novel about human Collectors and the Fae. Zoey is an amazing character packed full of spice and vinegar. Having learned to be a survivor at a young age she is a force to be reckoned with. There are two other main characters, but this was a unique twist that had us following a main character about half way through, and then it switches up on us. I was not quite sure what to think of this at the moment, but as the story builds and familiarity increases in the second half I was fully supportive. I think this was essential to building this story so creatively, and I think it was excellent risk to take. The conclusion definitely full the remaining holes, and solidify the story line in detail. It has been a very long time since I delved into a paranormal novel that builds a story for the ages, and leaves me anticipating a series that will most likely cover many installments. I see the web of framework that this one powerful novel as spread, and I am so thrilled to see where it will go. Ryker and Zoey definitely have the friction that leaves us eager for more, but be aware it will not happen here. While I can always enjoy a nice smutty book this is not one of them. This is not just a story it is an adventure, or better yet an alternate reality for readers. Packed full of fascinating characters and side lined with this invigorating story line this series is not a choice, but an addiction you must explore. Stacey Marie is not an author that I am familiar with, but she most definitely made her mark. I see that she has some other series, and it will be my mission to read them as well. If her other works prove as successful as this experience she will be my new favorite. It has been a long time coming, but talented work such as this are rare. Not everyone can create stories of such perfection.

Blog Tour Review: Consolation by Corrine Michael

Title: Consolation
By: Corrine Michaels
Series: The Consolation Duet #1

BookWhisperer Rating:

He wasn’t even on my radar.

What it can't be over yet!?!?!?! Not like this?!?!?!?! Oh how have I not encountered you Miss Corrine Michael. In the many years of my reviewing it seems almost impossible that someone creating such wonderful stories would have escaped my radar. So, yes impossible or not this was my first experience with Ms. Michael's works, and I am an absolutely from this point on a dedicated fan. I will be on a mission to read all the stories before this and after. As Consolation progressed I began to assume there must have been more to this series. The familiarity between some of the characters and author had me feeling as though they had their own story. Now I know that not only is there another story, but they have there own series and this was a debuting spin off. Regardless, I am a fan and completely in love with this little family. Consolation will reach the extreme peaks and lows of emotions, and readers will effortlessly find themselves investment heart and soul. The power of words are evident in works by author such as this one. The ability to make you weep and wallow in despair or bounce in your seat like a twelve year old girl take a certain exceptional level of talented writing, and it is beyond evident here. Moments of this story had me in emotional overload, and I would not trade one minute. Such a story is a pleasure to review, but the velocity of power is almost tangible. This story is a love story, but it is also a book about survival and the power to move on. This young woman never expected to be widowed at 27, but the display of power and determination to care for her daughter is inspiring. Creating such a story must be difficult. As the timeline spanned out I was concerned that this would be a rush read not leaving enough time to really build the relationship, and allow the grief that another person would experience in such a situation. My concern was futile, because the development was so perfect that this was almost an effortless transition. As way all the other developments throughout, but I was caught off guard at several twists and turns. Michael really knows how to pack a punch, and precariously throws you in a tail spin at a moments notice. The conclusion of this story has a major cliff hanger. This is one for the record books, and I never saw it comes. I know that I say this all the time, but I can not wait to get the next book. I can not experience the level of anticipation that I am experiencing.
