Review: One Night of Sin by Elle Kennedy

Sometimes it’s good to be bad…

When it comes to sex, good girl Skyler Thompson always plays it safe, choosing stable and sedate over wild and thrilling. She doesn’t do one-night-stands, but one look at sinfully sexy Gage Holt and she’s willing to reconsider. He makes her want to be bad for once in her life, and she’s prepared to take what she wants.

Danger follows former MMA fighter Gage Holt like a shadow. Despite his successes as part owner of Sin, an exclusive nightclub in Boston, Gage can’t risk getting involved with a woman, especially one as sweet as Skyler. Still, he can’t resist a taste—and it’s so damn good he has to see her again.

As addicted as he is to her, Gage knows there’s no future for him and Skyler—not with his past lurking in the dark corners of an MMA cage. But Skylar’s tougher than she looks, and she’s ready to fight for her man.

Normally, I love Elle Kennedy’s books.  She always writes the perfect guy and the best steamy moments but for some reason, I could not get into this book.  Honestly, it started out great.  Gage was perfectly sexy when he first sees Skyler in his club and their time out in the alley was hot.  However, it just turned from there.  I think, even though I really can’t say for sure, that it was the fact that it was all too quick.  Maybe if the book was longer and I got to see a little more teasing and playfulness from the characters, I could truly believe the passion behind the words.

This doesn’t mean that I am giving up on Elle Kennedy by any means.  I am still a huge fan of her and her books.  I especially like the “Out of Uniform” series.  If you haven’t read any of those, go check them out.

This book does set itself up for more of the secondary characters to be come a part of the series, which I thought was really smart.  I do look forward to continuing with this series to see where Elle Kennedy decides to take us.

She was born the day the world ended…

Nurrin has lived her entire life with zombies—trapped behind walls meant to keep them safe. She’s mostly happy there. But when a zombie horde breach the walls of her Haven, she has to trust her brother, Collin, and his best friend to keep her alive.

He just wants his past to die…

Finn O’Malley has given up on voicing warnings that are ignored. No one cares that the zombies are changing. Now all that matters is keeping Collin and Nurrin safe from what’s outside the walls of a Haven. But when Nurrin’s best friend picks up a contact infection, he agrees to get the medicine needed to save his life. Forced together, relying on each other in a strange Haven, zombies aren’t the most dangerous thing they’re facing.

In their world, only one thing remains true: everything ends in blood.

I love zombies and I loved this book.  It is a fast paced, thrilling, action packed, romantic struggle kind of a book and it is right up my alley.

Nurrin (Ren) escapes the under attack Haven with her brother Collin, his friend Finn, and her boyfriend/best friend Dustin and they are left in the Wide Open.  What they weren’t prepared for was the possibility that someone might get infected while escaping.  This leads to Ren and Finn taking off to find the medication that will stave off the infection of Ren’s loved ones.  It’s like a fun road trip except Ren despises Finn, hordes of zombies are everywhere, it’s dangerous, there is no rest, and it is not fun at all.

The world that Andrews created is so wonderfully terrifying that I was sucked in immediately.  I found myself invested into the characters.  And the mysteries that are wrapped up in this book had me on the edge and guess constantly.  Like why it is kept secret that Ren is a First, who Finn truly is, and what the Order really entails?

And last but not least, Finn.  Finn is a major jerk but he is a major jerk that you will come to love.  He is not the kind of character that outwardly shows himself as a jerk and then turns into a softy (well, he isn’t as of now.) But he is the kind of character that is straight up a jerk all the way around but something about him makes you respect him and realize that his attitude necessary (reminds me a lot of The Walking Dead’s Daryl Dixon in some ways.) I am very interested in finding out more about Finn and how this strained relationship with Ren is going to play out.  Plus, where in the heck is Collin and Dust?

If you like zombie movies or shows, you will really enjoy this book; trust me.

Review: Meeting His Match by Katee Robert

Title: Meeting His Match
By: Katee Robert
Series: Match #1
My Copy: Ebook from Publisher
Book Whisperer's Rating:

When New York matchmaker Addison St. Claire is tasked with matching her best friend's new brother-in-law, she almost refuses. But the sexy southern CEO turns out to be a challenge she can't resist, because if anyone needs to meet his soul mate, it's this man. And if matching him with someone else removes the temptation of being near him? Even better.

The last thing Caine McNeill needs is a matchmaker—especially a gorgeous redhead who spouts nonsense about soul mates, critiques what he drives and how he dresses, buys him a dog, and pesters him about a million little things he couldn't care less about. It's a crying shame he has to keep his hands off because chemistry like what's flaring between them ought to be explored. Thoroughly.

And so the battle begins. Addison is determined to stick to her plan of setting him up on dates with other women, and Caine is equally determined to ignore these women and seduce her.

A spin-off of the series “Wedding Dare” seemed right up my ally.  If you read the series, you might remember Brock and Regan (Regan was terrified of squirrels) and this story introduces us to Brock’s brother Caine and Regan’s friend Addison.

This story was a cute, quick read.  Addison is a matchmaker and gets sent down to Tennessee (by Regan) to set up Caine because Caine is a workaholic.  Their first meeting doesn’t go well, in fact most of their meetings do not go well until Caine starts getting used to Addison living in his house (which I found a little odd.)  However, this closeness allows the other to see who they truly are as a person and it sets them up for a passionate ride.

But Addison only thinks that it can be just a passionate ride until she finds him a soul mate.  She believes that you can only have one soul mate and she has already had hers but Caine begs to differ.

HOORAY!

Title: When You Were Mine ( A Moreno Brother's novella)
Author: Elizabeth Reyes
Age Group: NA
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: Fall 2014

Synopsis

When her head was screaming “enough,” her hopeful heart continued to whisper “wait.”
It's the only way Valerie Zuniga can justify her ongoing addiction to the amazing but ever, elusive Alex Moreno. Mesmerized by the profound connection neither has ever quite understood, Valerie  accepts their crazy relationship for what it is—non-exclusive.
That is until the incredible highs no longer numb the sting of the intense lows.
As tasteless and slippery as pride can be, for Alex it's always been the hardest pill to swallow.
Faced with a final ultimatum, the choice is a no-brainer for Alex. Despite his insanely busy life he's determined to prove to Valerie, that not only is he ready to commit, it's what he's always wanted—to claim Valerie as his exclusively.
But just as it kept him from admitting his real feelings all those years, will his obstinate pride once again step in and ruin things just when they're finally getting it right?

Excerpt

"Why are you here?" she demanded.

"I wanna talk to you?" he asked hopefully.

"No," her response was too quick—abrupt. "I'm busy now. Try me another time."

Okay maybe he deserved that. But he knew she wasn't busy. He knew he had to convince her to hear him out. Alex was determined to say everything he came here to say to her tonight. And then he saw it. The movement behind her. His eyes zeroed in on a guy sitting at her small kitchen table looking equally as relaxed as Valerie texting something on his phone and there were two glasses of wine on the table.

Alex took him in for another second from top to bottom as the slow boil inside him began to bubble. The guy put his phone down then reached for the bottle of wine and poured them each a little more.

On instinct Alex put his hand on the door in case she even thought of trying to slam the door on his face. That wasn't happening now. And any hope of this night ending amicably like he'd been optimistic about was instantly squashed. He turned to Valerie whose earlier incensed eyes looked a little panicked now. "Who the fuck is that?"

Review: Hopeful by Louise Bay

hopeful

Title: Hopeful

By: Louise Bay

My Copy: Ebook for Review

BookWhisperer Rating:

Four Books

Guys like Joel Wentworth weren't supposed to fall in love with girls like me. He could have had his pick of the girls on campus, but somehow the laws of nature were defied and we fell crazy in love.
For a short time, I thought it would be for infinity.
On July 10, 2006, immediately after graduation, Joel left for New York. And, despite him wanting me to go with him, I'd refused, unwilling to disappoint my parents and risk the judgment of my friends. I hadn’t seen him again. Never even spoke to him.
I've spent the last eight years working hard to put my career front and center in my life, dodging any personal complications. I have a strict no-dating policy. I've managed to piece together a reality that works for me.
Until now.
Now, Joel's coming back to London.
And I need to get over him before he gets over here.
Hopeful is a stand alone novel.

our thoughts

A romantic's dream!!!! This was my first experience with works by Louise Bay, and I am a definite fan. Hopeful is a raw and gritty love story. Joel and Ava's story inspires raw emotions that only a talented author can masterfully provoke. Joel is a private and humble character, and I was instantly in love with him unconditionally. Ava seems to be lacking much confidence, so this leaves her consistently disconcerted and uncertain in many aspects of her life. When these characters paths cross one another it cause an explosive of massive proportions. They are dynamite together, but with her own personal issues can their love survive the test of time. I was blown away by every brush of the hand and act forceful possession. Joel is an example of the perfectly created man, so be prepared for a new addition to the book boyfriend list. Through everything the love between these characters seems indestructible, but just when I thought that this was the purest version of loving unconditionally, life finally knocks them down. This is a HEA, and I am happy with the nice and tidy box the conclusion can be wrapped up in. I look forward to seeing more from Louise Bay in the future.

Out of Control by Jinsey Reese and Victoria Green

Title: Out of Control
By: Jinsey Reese and Victoria Green
Series: Untamed #2
My Copy: Ebook from Authors
BookWhisperer's Rating:

Three years have passed since Dare Wilde walked out of Reagan McKinley's life. Three years of radio silence. Three years of regrets.

But she’s not the same girl anymore. Now, at twenty-two, Reagan has big plans to change her life, and it all starts with a trip to Europe. Instead of heading into Harvard Law like her parents had planned, she’s crossed the ocean to follow her dreams in the art world. Her dreams. For once.

A chance meeting in Paris brings Reagan and Dare face-to-face again, but is it serendipity...or penance? A chasm of unspoken hurt stands between them, but they can’t fight the passion they have for each other. And now that she’s found Dare again—the one person in this world who makes her feel whole—she doesn’t want to let go. Problem is, she may not have a choice.

Two parts. One whole.

Together...they’re out of control.

You know that you are sucked into a series when you want to call your friends and say, “Sorry I can’t come hang out tonight, I have something more important to do,” and then hang up and start reading book number three.  That is what I feel like doing right now.

Reese and Green’s characters Dare and Reagan have captured my heart even more.  I know that they are perfect together, the whole world knows that they are perfect together (minus the McKinleys,) but fate keeps intervening.   I hate fate in this book!  This series keeps building on the intensity of Dare and Reagan’s relationship and it is just so real and natural.  What I mean by that is I can see two people, coming from different backgrounds, struggling to fight for their love with each other when outside forces are tearing them apart.  After Reagan denies knowing Dare at the end of the first book, which she did to protect him, she knows that she is still madly in love with him, even after three years.  So when she finally runs across him in Paris, she wants nothing else but him.  However, Dare is very resistant to her arrival, and understandably so.  But you know that he still holds the same amount of love for her that he did in the past but it is that struggle he shows to not have his heart rip out again that makes this book so real.

Oh, what a rollercoaster of emotions this book is but it is worth every gasp.

This part was pure gold to me; it actually took my breath away:
“I stared at Dare, tears in my eyes, and held up two fingers.  Two parts. He held up one finger. One whole.”

Bloody fantastic!
