TEASER

Disclaimer: Details subject to change in final rewrites.

The sound coming from Nellie’s phone again woke them both. Abel had actually woken up a few hours prior when it had beeped a few times. Now it was ringing. He’d almost snuck out earlier while she slept soundly as he had all the other times. She hadn’t even stirred from the phone beeping. But he got caught up watching Nellie sleep. He knew now he must’ve dozed off again because the last thing he remembered was lying back on the pillow to gaze at that peaceful very content expression on her face.

Not missing the surprised double take she did when she realized he was still in bed with her, Abel smirked, watching her reach for her phone. The second she glanced at the screen, she sat up quickly.

“Shit! Is that the right time?”

“Long exhausting nights will do that to you.” Abel didn’t even try to hide the immense satisfaction the very thought gave him. Bringing his hands behind his head in no hurry at all to get going, he smiled smugly. In fact, he couldn’t think of anything better than sticking around and going a few more rounds with Nellie. “But it’s Saturday, so it’s okay to sleep in, right?”

Nellie’s phone rang again, and already she was making her way off of the bed. “Yeah, but I’m supposed to meet someone this morning.” Grabbing a robe from the chair next to her bed, she flung it around her and held her hand up to Abel, while clicking the screen on her phone and bringing it to her ear before he could ask who she was meeting. “Logan? I’m so sorry. I’m running really late, but I can meet you in like forty minutes?”

In direct contrast to how fast he felt his insides warm, Abel sat up slowly, staring at her. He’d had a feeling from day one that if it ever came down to it that he might be a little bothered to hear about her with someone else. It was to be expected, right? Human nature. But he hadn’t expected to feel what he was feeling now.

“Oh, The Country Kitchen sounds delish. Their breakfasts are huge and I’m starving actually.”

He continued to stare at her with a bit of curiosity and something else as she rummaged through her drawers. This had to be business. No way was she jumping out of bed with him to go meet another guy for breakfast. Sure they had an unspoken understanding—no fucking demands and all that shit—but he’d been certain Nellie had more class than this. Was she really chatting it up with another dude while he was still lying naked in her bed listening to her?

The rest of her conversation with the guy was frustrating. The guy was obviously doing most of the talking because she wasn’t saying much more than “uh huh,” so she wasn’t giving him much more to go on about who this Logan guy was.

The choice of clothes she laid out on the bed as she continued with her call only made his insides warmer. Instead of a business suit like the ones that drove him nuts, she laid out a pair of jeans and casual knit top. As off-putting as the idea of her wearing a sexy skirt suit to go meet Logan at the Country Kitchen was, it would’ve at least meant this was for sure a business meeting, not a casual breakfast date with a guy.

He’d gotten out of bed himself now and watched as she brought out the big sexy wedge sandals from her closet. She finally hung up just as he’d finished pulling on his pants. He stared at her as he buttoned his fly, doing his best to keep his cool. If he blew up now, this whole thing could come to an end, as he’d known it would from the beginning, but he didn’t know if he was ready to end this just yet.

“I’m sorry,” she explained, still rushing around the room. “I don’t mean to run out on you like this, but if I’d have known you’d still be here this morning, I could’ve cancelled this last night.” She paused her rushing for a moment to glance at him a bit uneasy. “I just assumed, you know, like all the other times . . .” She looked away before she added the last comment. “That you’d be gone when I woke.”

Swallowing hard, he took in a slow breath. No way was he going to blow this. He knew he was walking on a tightrope. One wrong move and he could go down head first or worse. He could do the very thing they’d both said they wouldn’t do, and the tightrope could snap altogether, leaving no possibility of climbing back on. But he had to ask. “Who’s Logan?”

Troy=yummy!  Yes, there is a plot line to this story but I think what I was so drawn to was the dominance Troy showed when he was around Ruby.  It wasn’t anything over the top but it was present.  He is a cop for Pete’s sake so he has to have this level of authority and he uses it at his job but he also used it with Ruby, which made it even sexier.  His character is so confident and even cocky but not that extreme kind of cocky where it is a turn off from the get go.

I am really enjoying Tessa Bailey; she knows how to write.  I am looking forward to reading many more of her books and falling in love with the male characters.

Review: Rock Chick Reckoning by Kristen Ashley

Title: Rock Chick Reckoning

Series: Rock Chick #6

Book Whisperer Rating:

Stella’s the lead singer and lead guitarist of the Blue Moon Gypsies and Stella used to be Mace’s girl. Mace broke up with her though and the loss of him rocked her world. But Stella gets a call, late at night (again) from one of the members of her crazy band. She has to go play clean up (again) and runs into Mace (and a shed load of police) and ends up getting shot.

Mace finds he doesn’t like it much that his ex-girlfriend got shot, right in front of him but it’s worse. A very bad man has thrown down the gauntlet and ALL the Rock Chicks are in the firing line. Stella doesn’t want Mace to be the one to keep her alive but she has no choice… mainly because Mace isn’t giving her one.

This story from the Rock Chick series is different from all the others.  Stella and Mace had a lot more angst than the other characters coupling because of their tormented past between each other and their past in general.  Because of this angst, it was harder for me to connect with their love in the beginning.  I felt their lust for each other, I felt their want for each other but when the moment hit when their love for each other was exposed, oh my!  To see hard, demon filled Mace finally let his walls down and let Stella in made me joyous.  I feel that Stella and Mace was a couple that really had to work hard for their relationship and love to be strong compared to the other Rock Chick couples.   This made Rock Chick Reckoning a more heart-breaking read.  Totally worth the heart-break!

I liked how KA brought the other couples POVs in to this plot.  Instead of the story focusing on the troubles of Mace and Stella only, all Rock Chick couples were in danger and as a reader, I got to read mostly from Stella POV but I got read from the others character’s POV. This was a nice twist in the plot because the men were ready to lay low to protect their loved ones (and you get to read why they decide this) but when it came time for action, a war started and fury was let loose.    I also like experiencing how the other couples perceived Stella and Mace together; how they slowly witnessed Mace open up.

Another great story from KA.

Ava hates men, she has reason and she’s vowed not only never to get involved with another one again but also to exact vengeance on her best friend’s, lying, cheating husband. Since Luke, Ava’s childhood crush, is now a private investigator, she thinks to enlist him but changes her mind at the last second.

Too late, Luke knows she’s up to something and he’s already seen many a Rock Chick try to fight her own battles without the Hot Bunch stepping in. He’s having none of it. She’s having none of him. The clash of the Rock Chick and Hot Guy begins but Luke’s got the advantage. He has handcuffs and he’s not afraid to use them.

Contains spoilers…
This plot line, to me, has more twist and turns in it than the other Rock Chick books, heck, it might have more if you added them all up.  Rock Chick Revenge kept me highly satisfied with all the action, the drama, the miscommunication, and the love.  KA is awing me with her ability to write such awesome books.  She keeps getting better and better as time goes on and I just get sucked in to all of it.  I don’t think I noticed that life was happening around me while I was reading this book.  Brilliant!

I would like to say that Luke has lived up to all I have ever dreamed of and more!  You get a taste of him in Rock Chick Renegade but you get ALL of him in this book.  He is a man’s man!  Everything about him brought me chills.  When he first finds out Ava is in trouble, he takes action to fix it because he swears nothing is going to hurt her.  However, when she does get hurt, he goes so far off the wall that I can only label it as hot!  Everything about him is hot.  When they fight, he’s hot.  When they go at each other, he’s hot.  And when someone touches her, he’s pissed, which makes him hot.  He is by far my favorite in the Hot Guy group (if you couldn’t tell from my praises above.)

I also enjoyed Ava’s character.  She has been in love with Luke since she was 8 years old and lost touch with him while battled her weight problems.  But when she walks back into Luke’s life, it is like she lite a fire in his soul.  There is something about them that just burns so brightly.

If I could book one KA book and turn it into a movie, so far, this would be the one; that is how fantastic it is.

Review: Rock Chick Renegade by Kristen Ashley

Title: Rock Chick Renegade
By: Kristen Ashley
Series: Rock Chick #4

Book Whisperer Rating:

Jules has got a score to settle against the drug dealers of Denver. Vance has made it his mission that Jules won’t get dead while dishing out vigilante justice. Jules doesn’t have time for romance, she’s too busy saving the world and she enlists Zip (the gunstore owner), Heavy (an ex-PI) and Frank (a mysterious recluse) to help.

The Rock Chicks of Fortnum’s Bookstore get involved to provide romantic advice and guidance, none of which Jules accepts at first. The Hot Bunch of Nightingale Investigations adopt Jules as one of their own. Even though Jules tries to hang on to her inner Head Crackin’ Mamma Jamma, the Rock Chicks; Hot Bunch; Jules’s long-suffering Uncle Nick; Jules’s friend the rotund, African-American, Jackie-O wannabe, May; and especially Vance will stop at nothing to wear her down.

But Jules makes some bad guys pretty angry and one is dedicated to taking her out. Vance and the Hot Bunch have to pull out all the stops to keep her alive. At the same time, Jules and Vance learn the true meaning of home but once they find this precious entity they’ve been searching for all their lives, will Jules’s enemies tear it away?

To me, Jules is a different kind of Rock Chick in this collection.  All the other Rock Chick were either brought into a dangerous situation or stumbled upon it but Jules went out and created these dangerous situations for herself.  Jules does this to keep drugs from getting in the hands of the kids she loves, since she is a social worker.  All I can say is, probably not smart to rile up drug dealers but very noble.  This gets her into some small trouble and Vance steps in to eliminate that small trouble.

Did I like this book? Absolutely!  Kristen Ashley has never let me down.  It is straight up drama at every turn, dangerous, good-deed doing bad boys saturate the pages, and hot, sexy scenes between Jules and Vance makes me love this book and continue loving the series.  I really loved that KA added Luke into this book more because something about him just oozes sexiness and I can’t wait to read more about him.
