Review: Walking Disaster by Jamie McGuire

Title: Walking Disaster
By: Jamie McGuire
Series: Beautiful #2
My Copy: Ebook through NetGalley
BookWhisperer Rating:

Finally, the highly anticipated follow-up to the New York Times bestseller Beautiful Disaster. Can you love someone too much?
Travis Maddox learned two things from his mother before she died: Love hard. Fight harder.

In Walking Disaster, the life of Travis is full of fast women, underground gambling, and violence. But just when he thinks he is invincible, Abby Abernathy brings him to his knees.

Every story has two sides. In Beautiful Disaster, Abby had her say. Now it’s time to see the story through Travis’s eyes.

Just when you thought you were destined long for more of this story forever. HERE IT IS!!! Walking Disaster the sequel to Beautiful Disaster. Every twist and turn from the first story all told from Travis Maddox's pov. *SWOONING* Back to the point I anticipated an incredible story, and this was all that and more. I must explain after finishing the first book I was IN LOVE. Travis was hot, dark, and dangerous to everyone but Abby. To her he was obviously gorgeous, but he was also everything that she had vowed to leave behind. Everything about Travis caused a red flags to pop up in her mind leading to the utter heart break of their story. Walking Disaster is that same story, but watching it from Travis's eye is whole new and amazing experience. It was almost like reading the story for the first time except I knew parts of the story that didn't even appear in this line up. After reading Beautiful Disaster my view of Travis surrounded around his confidence and determination; he seemed unbreakable, unstoppable, and an force to be reckoned with. Book two proved just how wrong I could be Travis is not either of these. Given he is a brute, and I wouldn't want to meet him in a dark alley mad, but throughout this story his uncertainty and reluctance prevailed. Without this personal walk through his shoes I would never have seen this story in such a splendid light. With this experience this amazing story that I loved has transformed into a complex and splendid journey that very few could duplicate. Upon nearing the end of Walking Disaster the familiar depression loomed over head, but it was well worth the ending torture to experience this story. It is very difficult to express just how much I love these stories, and just how incredible Jamie McGuire is as an author. Her style is explosive and tempting. She knows how to keep her readers hanging on the cliff just praying for an easy fall. Walking Disaster epilogue can be summed up in one word. PERFECT!!! I will not spoil it, but just suffice it to say that Travis Maddox will continue to fight for those he loves. What more could you ask for? ~BookWhisperer Reviewer JO~

Review: Arouse by Nina Lane

Title: Arouse

By: Nina Lane

Series: Spiral of Bliss Book 1

My Copy: Ebook from Author

BookWhisperer Rating:

three books

"One day I'm going to touch you in a thousand different ways and show you how to touch me," he said.
And he did.
Struggling with a tormented past, undergraduate Olivia Winter once led a practical but isolated life. Then she met Professor Dean West, a brilliant scholar of medieval history who melted Liv's inhibitions and taught her the meaning of both love and erotic pleasure. But after three years of a blissful, lusty marriage, Liv and Dean now face a crisis that threatens everything they believe about each other...and sex might not be enough to save them.

our thoughts From the book description I had very high expectation for what I wanted out of Arouse. I anticipated a powerful and mesmerizing love story, but what I found proved to be somewhat lacking. The best way that I can find to express my feelings is to explain this story as more of a daytime soap opera. Arouse is starts out in the present with a married couple that a hot and steamy relationship. As the story continues on it secrets and betrayals cause a tremendous wedge between this couple. From this point on it is a bit of back and forth between the beginning of there relationship to the current situations. Olivia is not really a character that I could relate to, and I found to be a mystery to me. Her over zealous expectations of this man was a bit frustrating to read, and even with his past mistakes and decisions I found myself sympathizing with his character. This view of perfection, and the pedestal that Olivia has raised his character to ultimately are the key source of such a tragic downfall in this story. With such problematic relation to the story I feel that I am a bit of a bad source for the review of this novel. I wouldn’t want anyone to label this author, because of my feelings since I feel that all of struggles related directly to the storyline and not her talent or ability to write a great story. The storyline would have received a one or two star from me, but because of her ability to write I feel compelled to give it a three.

Review: Fighting for Flight by Jamie Saulsbury

Title: Fighting for Flight
By: Jamie Saulsbury
Series: Fighting Book 1
My Copy: Ebook from Author for Review
BookWhisperer Rating: Five Star

What happens when in order to win, you’re forced to lose?

The only daughter of an infamous Las Vegas pimp, Raven Morretti grew up an outsider. Liberated from the neglectful home of her prostitute mother, she finds solace as a mechanic. With few friends, she’s content with the simple life. Flying under the radar is all she knows, and more than she expects.

Until she catches the eye of local celebrity, UFL playboy Jonah Slade.

Weeks away from his title fight, Jonah is determined to stay focused on everything he’s trained so hard to achieve. Undefeated in the octagon, he’s at the height of his career. But resisting Raven’s effortless allure and uncomplicated nature is a fight he can’t win.

Jonah trades in his bad-boy reputation and puts his heart on the line. But when her father contacts her, setting in motion the ugly truth of her destiny, Jonah must choose. In a high-stakes gamble where love and freedom hang in the balance, a war is waged where the price of losing is a fate worse than death.

Will the hotheaded Jonah be able to restrain his inner fighter to save the woman he loves?

Or will Raven be forced into a life she’s been desperate to avoid?

Wow Amazing! I have been in a string of several mediocre books, and this was just the saving grace I needed. Fight for Flight was a truly incredible story packed full of emotion and intensity. Raven and Jonah are two very different people with drastically different backgrounds, but this just may prove to be everything they need to be perfect for one another. Jonah years have been spent keeping things light and easy. Determined to never open his heart up to the chance of loss; he has made quite a reputation for himself. After the loss of his Father Jonah barricaded himself behind his brick walls of independence that will protect his heart.  Raven, is like nothing we have seen. Truly a unique character, she is a mechanic that just happens to fall in Jonah’s lap for his latest restoration. Only from the start these two characters are drawn to each other like moths to a flame, and I was easily absorbed into their story. I must comment on how nice it was to have a romance that was not your usual “I Love Him, I Love Him Not” scenario; from the first obstacle Raven is an open book for Jonah. Misunderstandings are overcome easily by these high functioning characters that think it through logically.  Further supporting my love of these characters originality they are honest, trustworthy, and true reflection of love; whatever they have to overcome is done together. This alones takes this story to a much higher level than lust and attraction; forming the deep seeded bonds of love and dedication from fans. I see Jonah and Raven start out this story as two buds, and as the story progresses they bloom to the most vibrant and beautiful blossoms that I have ever seen. With the perfect mixture of action and emotion this will story will suck in board range of fans, and hold them on the edge of their seats. I know I say this all the time, but I absolutely cannot wait for book two. This next story will actually shift and follow Blake’s story; that might add I have fallen in love with over this story with the help of Raven.  I don’t like to prematurely label books and authors, and with this being my first experience with this author I cannot certainty prediction, so let’s just say if the next is half as good as this book it will be amazing.  If her first novel can be such an incredible masterpiece it will be a treat to read anything more she has to offer. This debuting MMA Series will be one of the BookWhisperer’s followed series, and be on the lookout for more details of upcoming books here. In complete honesty, this debuting novel was the probably top five books that I have read this year; definitely worth your time and money. BOOKWHISPERER FAVORITE!!

Surprise Teaser

Four Is A Crowd........

I dress in a vixen red low v sweater dress, black fishnets and my new leopard Jimmy’s and a chunky leopard belt. I pull my hair into a messy bun leaving a few wispy pieces around my face, and of course I wear red lipstick. My inner kitten was hiding at the thought of spending the evening with Jax, Sadie and Evan, but little bitch would just have to deal.
The look on Jax’s and Sadie’s faces when I walked in on Evan’s arm was priceless. Jax’s jaw tightened and his fist were clinched. Sadie was draping her self all over him, gag me. I excused my self to the bathroom. I wasn't expecting Sadie to follow me.
Jabbing her finger in my arm as I flinch away she sneers “you think you’re making him jealous but your pushing him straight back to me, where he belongs.” She turns abruptly and stalks out of the bathroom.
“Fuck you, you can keep him” I scream at her back.
Jax’s manager calls for everyone to take a seat; they are ready to show the new music video. I spy Evan sitting alone nursing a whiskey sour and join him, just as Sadie plops her ass in the seat on the other side of him followed by Jaxson.
“So how do you know Grace?” Sadie asks Evan plastering her fake smile.
Jaxson cocks his head to the side like he wants to know as well.
“The fucks it you blondie?” he snaps clearly not asking.

Sadie’s mouth drops as does mine, Evan is an asshole but something is definitely up his ass.
“Evan don’t be rude” I weakly smile at him. Before more can be said the video begins to play on a jumbo screen brought in for the occasion.
My cheeks flush when I hear myself say three little words; I love you to Jaxson. I can see him looking at me from across the table in the corner of my eye and I notice Sadie is staring a hole through him. Then out of no where Evan says “excuse me Grace but I refuse to sit here and watch the three of you mind fuck with each other, I’m out” and he walks right out the door.

Review: Beyond Control by Kit Rocha

beyond control

Title: Beyond Control

By: Kit Rocha

Series: Beyond Book #2

My Copy: Ebook from NetGalley

BookWhisperer Rating:

three books

She refuses to be owned.
Alexa Parrino escaped a life of servitude and survived danger on the streets to become one of the most trusted, influential people in Sector Four, where the O’Kanes rule with a hedonistic but iron fist. Lex has been at the top for years, and there’s almost nothing she wouldn’t do for the gang…and for its leader. Lie, steal, kill—but she bows to no one, not even Dallas O’Kane.
He’ll settle for nothing less.
Dallas fought long and hard to carve a slice of order out of the chaos of the sectors. Dangers both large and small threaten his people, but it’s nothing he can’t handle. His liquor business is flourishing, and new opportunities fuel his ambition. Lex could help him expand his empire, something he wants almost as much as he wants her. And no one says no to the king of Sector Four.
Falling into bed is easy, but their sexual games are anything but casual. Attraction quickly turns to obsession, and their careful dance of heady dominance and sweet submission uncovers a need so deep, so strong, it could crush them both.

our thoughts Beyond Control is the second book of the Beyond series by Kit Rocha. This is a very unique and dark story. This story builds a post apocalyptic society, and the main setting is takes place in Dallas’s sector four. I fell in love with the story in book one with the story of Jasper and Noelle, and found myself taken away in this dark and ruthless world that continues straight through this second book and follow up of Lexie and Dallas story. Both characters had front line roles in both stories, so I had been eagerly anticipating this second book. I had mentioned in the review for Beyond Shame that sexual content of this novel could be a bit intense. After finishing Beyond Control that book did not hold a candle to the intensity of this novel. Honestly, I felt it was a little over the top for my liking. I still relished in the continued storyline for Dallas and his sector, but I just felt out of my element when it came to the sexual encounters of the book. I would suggest this to readers with a very broad sexual interest. It is not for the light hearted.

Series: A Neighbo from Hell Novel #3

My Copy: Ebook from Author for Review

There’s nothing worse than living next door to your childhood nemesis, except maybe being forced to share your dream project with him, being blackmailed into going along with something that was just wrong on so many levels, and having your hot cocoa stolen by the person that drove you to drink it in the first place.

As long as she has plenty of hot cocoa, a pair of pliers on hand and is able to resist Connor O’Neil’s bad boy charm then Rory James should be able to make it through this project with her sanity intact. If not…..

She’d probably face a few more nights in jail, have a few more restraining orders slapped against her and lose her heart to the man that ruined her life.

our thoughts

I really love Mathewson’s hilarious style of writing.  Her characters are always funny with a nice twist of evilness (this is the “Neighbors from Hell series.”)  The crap that Rory and Connor do to each other is priceless.  What made me smile were that all these attacks on Rory were because Connor just couldn’t come out and say that he loved her.  He was willing to torture her than admit his feelings. As they grew up, Connor dealt with any man that ever treated Rory wrong quietly.  Many boyfriends were scared away because they were not good enough for her.

Mathewson gives great examples of why the town has forged together to keep Rory and Connor apart.  The very first chapter is a break down of some of the rotten games that they have played on each other and how the town was pulled into the mess.  Rules were made that they were not allowed in the same shop, class, or restaurant so that peace could be possible.  So Connor decides that they will be a couple so that all the bans will be dropped.  I thoroughly enjoyed reading how awkward (but oh so right) they felt in the beginning trying to be a couple but then it became second nature, it became hot!

I love friend to lover plots but I LOVE Mathewson’s enemy to lover plots even more.  The way Mathewson writes their interactions together makes their love more passionate, more intense, and more needed.  They harbored all those negative feelings for each other in the past years that when they get together, things explode.

Claire Nixon is a twenty-year-old college dropout with a secret.
To Claire, Adam Parker is just another flirty customer at the cafe, until a chance encounter and seemingly innocent comment spurs a bet between them. The bet is simple: If Adam can get Claire to reveal the secret that made her drop out of college, she has to re-enroll. If he doesn’t succeed, she gets to keep her secret and he has to stop stalking her at the cafe.
Claire thinks she has this one in the bag. She’s perfected the art of forgetting her past. But she isn’t prepared for Adam’s relentless pursuit or for him to share his own secrets. And she’s definitely not prepared for her rock star ex, and her secret, to come banging down her door one year later.

This book was so stinkin' cute that it made me just want to kick something, like a table, but I like my toes so I didn't.  However, Relentless is not just a warm and fuzzy book that makes you want to kick tables, it also has a really dark past for the main character Claire.  She is flawed to the max and finds out that her sexy neighbor is flawed as well.  Maybe two flawed people make a right! It's just a thought.

The flashbacks that Leo gives throughout the book shows that Claire has is hiding her horrible past and it made me want to skip to the back of the book just to find out what it was.  I can't handle secrets!  But all of it was absolutely brilliant because you realize the reason why Claire is the way she is and why she is struggling every day with her demons.

Adam's persistence to get to know Claire was uber cute and it made me think that if anyone were to ever dissolve the bubble Claire put around herself, it would be him.  He was willing to wait until Claire was ready to open herself up and was so sweet to her; just what Claire needed. Their time spent together was adorable, that is what made me want to kick the table.

Lets not forget Senia, Claire's awesome best friend.  She helps keep Claire strong and calm and every girl needs a BFF like that!

Oh, and my favorite quote: "I want to leave you dazed and confused for a week with nothing but my name on your lips."  Yes, Adam...please do so!

Relentless Excerpt

RELENTLESS
Excerpt from Chapter Three
The tires squeal, skidding across the asphalt as the truck plunges toward me. I’m frozen as I wait for the impact. I close my eyes and the first and only thought that crosses my mind is that this was inevitable. I’m finally being punished for my sins.
The squealing stops and my nose fills with the stench of burnt rubber. I open my eyes as I feel the heat of the engine against my arm. The grille of the truck is inches away from me and a cloud of smoke surrounds the front of the truck. I hear a car door opening, but I can’t see anyone approaching through the smoke until he’s right in front of me, Jack Dawson.
“Are you all right?” he asks. I’m shaking with adrenaline, but I don’t have a scratch on me. I nod and he grabs my arms. “You look like you’re in shock. I should take you to the hospital.”
“No!” I shout as I shrug my arms out of his grasp. “I’m fine. I just want to go home.”
“I’ll take you.”
“You almost killed me!”
He lets out a sheepish chuckle and it infuriates me. “Which is why you should let me take you home, so you don’t step in front of any more moving vehicles.”
“You think it’s funny that you almost murdered me?”
“It would have been manslaughter. And, hey, I saved you from that ‘roid junkie this morning. I guess this balances that out. Now everything is right with the universe.” I curl my lip in disgust and he smiles as he nods toward the cabin of the truck. “Come on. I’ve already tried to manslaughter you once tonight. I promise I won’t try again for at least another twelve hours. You’re safe for now.”
I roll my eyes as I walk toward the passenger door. He skips after me and opens the door for me to climb in. I step into the truck, using the handgrip to pull myself up, and bounce down into the seat. It smells like the coconut-scented sunblock I’ve had to purchase by the case since moving to Wrightsville Beach. He shuts the door and I flinch, still jumpy from nearly being mowed down by this monster.
He slides into the driver’s seat, but his hands make no move for the ignition. “Why were you running across the street in the middle of the night without looking both ways?”
“I was just walking home from a party. Can we go now?”
“A party? Are you drunk?”
“I don’t drink.”
He cocks an eyebrow as he studies me, as if his gaze is the equivalent of a Breathalyzer test.
“Hey, I’m not going to sue you, if that’s what you’re worried about.”
“I’m not worried.”
Ugh. This guy is annoyingly cocky.
“Let me take you to lunch today to make up for almost killing you.”
I turn to look through the rear window of the truck. Where are all the cars? Not that this street is exactly buzzing past midnight, but I’m beginning to think I’m never going to get home if someone doesn’t come along and force him out of this intersection.
“I’m sleeping in today.”
He tilts his head inquisitively. “What do you mean by sleeping in?”
“I mean curtains drawn, eye mask on, electronic devices switched off. Dead to the world sleeping in,” I say as I pull the house keys out of my purse and set the purse on the floor next to my feet.
“Sounds serious.”
“Sleep is serious.”
“What are you some kind of health nut?”
“I like getting my rest after a night of partying.”
“You just said you weren’t drinking.”
“Are you going to keep asking me questions or are you going to take me home? ‘Cause I can walk.”
He smiles as he turns the key in the ignition and pulls the truck forward. “Cora was right about you,” he says, then reaches across the console and shakes my knee.
I slap his hand away, accidentally jabbing him with the keys in my hand. “Hey, there’s this thing called personal space. And how do you know Cora?”
“I don’t believe in personal space. Separateness is an illusion. We are all connected.” He turns to me and flashes me a cunning smile as he pulls into my apartment complex. “Welcome home.”
There is only one way he would know where I live and also know Cora.
“You’re the new tenant?”
He continues to grin as he guides his truck into the parking space next to Senia’s empty space and kills the engine. A million sarcastic remarks about living underneath the person who nearly murdered me whiz through my brain, but I keep them to myself. If there’s one thing I hate it’s getting on bad terms with a neighbor. I never had neighbors growing up in the middle of nowhere with my mom. When I stayed with Senia for a few months after dropping out, I couldn’t believe how friendly her family was with their neighbors. They have parties almost every weekend together. Cora has practically become a surrogate grandmother to me. The least I can do is show her new tenant some courtesy.
“Well, then, welcome home to you, too,” I say, determined not to let our neighborly relationship get any more awkward.
He glances down at the steering wheel, unimpressed with my attempt at easing the tension. “Don’t you want to know what Cora said about you?”
I open the car door and slide out of the truck, letting out a small grunt as I land on the pavement. “Nope. I think I’ll let Cora tell me herself. Goodnight….”
“Adam,” he says. “I’ll tell you my last name at lunch.”

Review: Reflected in You by Sylvia Day

Series: Crossfire Book #2

BookWhisperer Rating:

Gideon Cross. As beautiful and flawless on the outside as he was damaged and tormented on the inside. He was a bright, scorching flame that singed me with the darkest of pleasures. I couldn't stay away. I didn't want to. He was my addiction... my every desire... mine.

My past was as violent as his, and I was just as broken. We’d never work. It was too hard, too painful... except when it was perfect. Those moments when the driving hunger and desperate love were the most exquisite insanity.

We were bound by our need. And our passion would take us beyond our limits to the sweetest, sharpest edge of obsession...

our thoughts

What a fantastic sequel that I ate up in a day. This book pulled on every string that my heart contained. There were joyful moments that made my heart swell and I swear I heard birds chirping in the background to a beautiful melody and then there were moments where my world came crashing down on me, my heart was ripped into pieces, and there were no more birds in the background. I seriously sat during lunch, reading this book and completely forgot to eat.

Eva and Gideon are still struggling through their relationship and every event either tears them apart or bonds them together; and there are a lot of events in this book. It is an absolutely intense relationship and book. Gideon’s possessiveness and protective side is at its fiercest level in this book. In most ways, this made him so super hot! Eva surprised me with gaining some strength closer to the end that I didn’t know her character could possess. And the secret that we have waited for came out in the opening.

I love Day’s writing ability in both of the Crossfires and I cannot wait to see what is in store for the third. Her writing is beautiful and so in-depth that I could feel the characters emotional struggles within my own head and heart.

While reading this book, Kelly Rowland’s song “Motivation” came on and I felt like this song should belong to Eva and Gideon. Just take a second to listen.

Meeting Jett was like lightning. Dangerous. Better left untouched. And better forgotten. But lightning always strikes twice.

Sexy, dangerously handsome, and arrogant Jett Mayfield attracts trouble, and women, like a lightning rod. But the night he meets Brooke he gets more than he bargained for. The green-eyed millionaire playboy isn’t used to taking no for an answer, and he isn’t about to start now.
When he proposes two months of no strings sex, Brooke is intrigued and accepts his proposal. Little does she know Jett’s determined to claim the one woman he can’t have, pulling her deeper into his dangerous world.
A man who doesn't take 'no' for an answer.
A woman afraid to surrender to love.
Two lives that are about to cross...and secrets laid bare.

our thoughts Surrender Your Love, there is something about this title that I love. Take a look a that cover if these to aspects don’t catch your eye; just let me tell you that the story will surpass both. Jett and Brooke are both explosive and genuine characters that will have you drool for more. This debuting novel will definitely make J.C. Reed a common name among adult romance lovers. Her style and talent left me amazed when I realized I was reading her first novel. The divine ability to create characters so complex is impossible for some seasoned authors. Brooke was easily a open book; being that the story is told in first person this was understandable. Jett, on the other hand, was left a mystery. As Brooke sorts through the “who is Jett Mayfield?”, so are the readers. Even more impressive was that this characters seems to transform over the pages, and never leaves readers with the ability to nail down this character. Recently, I had the pleasure of reading The Arrangement Book 1-4 by H.M. Ward, and this author reminds me so much of her style and spontaneity. Unfortunately, readers that like a nice and tidy ending are going to hate this story. Fortunately, I am not one of those readers. The cliff hanger ending left me flipping the page with vigor only to find nothing on the next page. Reed twisted me up in knots, and left me with a smile and promise for another book. SYL is a story that will leave you begging for more, and a instantaneous fan for the series from the first glimpse.

Truth or dare…
When Lacey Garrity finds her groom in flagrante delicto in the reception hall closet with her bridesmaid, she's saved by her best friend’s older brother—childhood tormentor, crush, and boxing bad boy Galen Thomas. Galen’s solution is both exciting and dangerous. What better way to forget the mess of her life than go on her honeymoon with a hot guy who can’t promise anything beyond today?
…or TKO?
Galen had been counting on Lacey's wedding to put her out of reach—and out of his mind—once and for all, but their steamy Puerto Rican escape is testing all his boundaries. Now that Lacey’s embracing her inner bad girl, Galen is tempted to throw in the towel and claim her for himself. But with the biggest fight of his career on the line and an important
business merger threatening to derail Lacey’s resolve, their romance might be down for the count before it even begins.

our thoughts finl

Look, I am totally fine with finding my new husband in midst of getting freaking with it if it means that I get me some Galen Thomas!  Is there a sign up sheet for him?

Anyways,  loved this story in so many ways.  I loved that Lacey always has the worst luck because it reminds me of me. I loved her best friend Cat who was ready to rip out some throats when Lacey stumbled on her newly wedded husband cheating on her.  And last, but not least (at all) I loved Galen Thomas.  He made this book perfect.  Galen suggests that Lacey go on her honeymoon and he will follow for some R&R but he doesn't plan the feelings he starts to acquire.

But lets get to the meat of this story; Galen and Lacey together were beyond sexy!  Their moments were hot because they were testing each other out; this relationship was completely new to them and slightly risque because she was married.  It made it bad and bad equals dirty.  We all know this.  :)

The kicker for me was the end; the press meeting made my heart grow three times bigger (like the Grinch.)
