About the Book:
For college student Emily Sheppard, the thought of spending a summer alone in New York is much more preferable than spending it in France with her parents. Just completing her freshman year at Callister University, Emily faces a quiet summer in the city slums, supporting herself by working at the campus library.
During one of her jogs through the nearby cemetery while visiting her brother Bill's grave, Emily witnesses a brutal killing-and then she blacks out. When Emily regains consciousness, she realizes she's been kidnapped by a young crime boss and his gang. She is hurled into a secret underworld, wondering why she is still alive and for how long.
Held captive in rural Vermont, she tries to make sense of her situation and what it means. While uncovering secrets about her brother and his untimely death, Emily falls in love with her very rich and very dangerous captor, twenty-six year- old Cameron. She understands it's a forbidden love and one that won't allow her to return to her previous life. But love may not be enough to save Emily when no one even knows she is missing.

Absolutely the best book I have read this year! Crow's Row will keep readers emotionally charged with every turn of the page. Emily and Cameron will rock your world with the heart wrenching, and utterly depressing odds that they must overcome. Emily is not your typical girl, and it is easy to fall in love with her character. Following her through this story will keep you on the edge of your seat; as you try to unravel the mysteries and questions that surround her unlikely situation. Cameron is amazing, and a strong and powerful character. Readers will love to love and hate his character from their first encounter. Notably these are not the only character, nor are they the most important. Crow’s Row is packed full of carefully crafted personalities that all add up to one hell of a story. This is not your cutesy love story! Crow's Row is story about desperation, love, and war. It will take readers on a journey that shows the underground world of criminal masterminds, and the dangers that accompany such a world. Action is your key component of this story, and it is a sprint from start to finish. As Cameron and Emily's worlds are turned upside down this story will rip reader’s hearts out with every turn of the page. I was captivated from start to finish; only to be left on a cliff hanger so large that I was overcome with despair. This emotional roller coaster is one that will leave you changed, and desperate for the sequel. Be prepared for a story that will touch your heart, and will remain in the forefront of your mind for days to come. If there was such a rating over five this would be it for me! BookWhisperer Favorite!!!!!!

Tell me More:

When Jacqueline follows her longtime boyfriend to the college of his choice, the last thing she expects is a breakup two months into sophomore year. After two weeks in shock, she wakes up to her new reality: she's single, attending a state university instead of a music conservatory, ignored by her former circle of friends, and failing a class for the first time in her life.

Leaving a party alone, Jacqueline is assaulted by her ex's frat brother. Rescued by a stranger who seems to be in the right place at the right time, she wants nothing more than to forget the attack and that night--but her savior, Lucas, sits on the back row of her econ class, sketching in a notebook and staring at her. He works at the coffee shop in the student center. He shows up at a downtown club, disappearing after several dances that leave her on fire.

Her friends launch Operation Bad Boy Phase, and nominate Lucas to be the perfect rebound.

When the would-be rapist turns stalker, spreading rumors that they've hooked up, Jacqueline has a choice: crumple in defeat or learn to fight back. Lucas proves supportive and protective, but he's hiding secrets of his own. Suddenly appearances are everything, and knowing who to trust is anything but easy.

review plate

I am always iffy when I hear such wonderful reviews about a book because I usually hold it to a higher standard and most of the time I am let down. However, this time I was not. Wow! Such a wonderful book!!! Webber pulls you in from the beginning of the first chapter and I knew I was hooked.

After Jacqueline’s attack, she starts attending her econ classes again and requests a second chance from her professor for her missed classes and mid-term. He grants it to her but suggests that she use the help of the tutor that the university employees. Since she has class on the days and time that the study group meets, Landon (econ tutor) must help Jacqueline via email. The relationship that Webber builds between these two is wonderfully adorable. The flirting between the emails gives Jacqueline a small hope and something to look forward to.

But then there is Lucas (her savior from the attack.) She starts to notice him all around campus and can’t get him out of her mind. After running into him a few times, he starts to creep into her brain. She notices that he is always there when she needs him but then he pushes her away because he has his own secrets he is hiding.

Jacqueline is torn between these two men. Landon is brilliant to boot, witty, and sweet. Lucas is protective, mysterious, and down right sexy. How is a girl to pick?

Besides loving Jacqueline, Lucas, and Landon, I really enjoyed Jacqueline’s best friend and roommate Erin. She was such a strong character and a pillar for Jacqueline when she needed her.

How Webber writes these relationships is nothing less than perfection. I lived Jacqueline’s life with her as I read this book. And of course, I feel in love with Lucas. This is a MUST READ book! And a warning, when you start this, make sure you have all day to finish it because you won’t want to put it down.

About the Book:

Annalisa believes she finally has a chance to share forever with Micah, but her fear that something will destroy their happiness grows stronger every day. He changed everything to be with her, leaving his horrible past far behind as they begin to see a bright and beautiful future together. Unfortunately, someone in the mob isn't willing to let go of their best hit man.
The second book in the Untouchable trilogy takes you on a journey of love, passion, sacrifice, heartbreak, and hope. She touched his heart, but what happens next should be…Unforgivable.

review plate

Ok! I am such a conflict of emotions at the moment. Micah and Annalisa are allowed a moment of happiness; then just dropped into one heaping pile of CRAP! What to say about this is almost beyond me, but I am going to try to befuddle my way through this review. I really really like this storyline. Micah, one the mob's best hit men, is an instant attraction in this book. He is dark, dangerous, and scary which ironically is what every romance reader loves. Annalisa is beyond perfect, almost to the point that sometime it is unrealistic. The obstacles in this book just roll out one after another, and it is almost overwhelming and unbelievable. The fact that such terrible things happen is not the problem, but whether a conscious act or not it would leave a scar that characters would have to overcome. Now, please don't think me a pessimist. Love can conquer many things, but it is not without it's own lasting mark. I am so emotionally exhausted after reading this book. That I have left myself questioning whether to read book three. My curiosity it churning, and I want to know what happens, but I just don't know that I can ride this rollercoaster again. I hate having to include this, but honesty is the best policy here. Untouchable is thrilling, brutal, and heart pounding but I think I may have over stayed my welcome with this particular story.

About the Book:

Picking a boyfriend can be murder, but for Annalisa Winslett, it might end up being the literal death of her.
No one at Pensacola High School suspects the girl they know as Annalisa McKinnis to be a wealthy heiress in hiding, but things begin to unravel when two new guys enroll. Both guys are gorgeous, and both are trying to win her over. The only problem is that one of them has a million dollar contract to put a bullet in her.
This book is the beginning of a wild ride in a trilogy that will make you wonder if the power of love can truly conquer all.
When her pure and innocent heart is offered to him, will this cold and empty hitman fall, or will he remain untouchable?

review plate

This book is like nothing I have ever seen. Lindsay Delagair is not afraid to create a story that will test readers limits. The concept of mafia hitmen crossing with a religious background is very complex. Micah and Annalisa have a crazy love that with honestly be tested by time. Such extremely different backgrounds are not easy to overcome, especially when one doesn't want to let go. I really enjoyed the overall story, and see a tremendous amount of potential in the story. I look forward to jumping right into Unforgivable, and hope that it offer even more than book one.

Review: The Darkest Hour by Maya Banks

the darkest hour

Title: The Darkest Hour

By: Maya Banks

Series: A KGI Novel Book 1

My Copy: Bought from Amazon

BookWhisperer Rating:

3 button

About the Book:

The Kelly Group International (KGI): A super elite, top secret, family-run business.

Qualifications: High intelligence, rock hard body, military background.

Mission: Hostage/kidnap victim recovery. Intelligence gathering. Handling jobs the US government can’t…

It’s been one year since ex-Navy SEAL Ethan Kelly last saw his wife Rachel alive. Overwhelmed by grief and guilt over his failures as a husband, Ethan shuts himself off from everything and everyone.

His brothers have tried to bring Ethan into the KGI fold, tried to break through the barriers he's built around himself, but Ethan refuses to respond… until he receives anonymous information claiming Rachel is alive.

To save her, Ethan will have to dodge bullets, cross a jungle, and risk falling captive to a deadly drug cartel that threatens his own demise. And even if he succeeds, he’ll have to force Rachel to recover memories she can’t and doesn’t want to relive—the minute by minute terror of her darkest hour—for their love, and their lives, may depend on it.

review plate

I saw the synopsis of the book and knew that I had to have it on my Kindle immediately. Ex-Navy Seal – check. Ex-Navy Seal’s wife in danger – check. Military brothers willing to fight for their family – check. All of the above made for a good book. As a reader, you get to see Ethan at his lowest of lows as he lives through one of his worst days, his wife’s one year death anniversary. It is then that Ethan finds that Rachel just might still be alive and recruits his brothers for the mission to save her.

What I loved about the book was it was action packed when the scene called for it. If felt like I was with these military agents, in the middle of the jungle, on a rescue mission and I felt that way throughout the book whenever the crap hit the fan (and it hits the fan plenty of times.)

I loved Mr. and Mrs. Kelly (the parents of the military boys) throughout the whole book. You could tell that the love that the brothers formed with each other, that tight bond, was because love was in the Kelly household. However, I didn’t understand the sub plot line of them “adopting” the girl that broke into their house. I kept thinking to myself, “What just happened?”

The main characters, Ethan and Rachel, are good characters. However, this plot is so commonly done that the characters and their love for each other needed to be so strong for this book to really make an impression. Unfortunately for me, it didn’t succeed. Don’t get me wrong, it is a good book to read but what it really lacked for me was just amazing passion between the two of them. Maybe it was because Rachel’s memory was somewhat lost, but when I finished, I was left feeling like there could have been more of “something.”

So, while it wasn’t what I was hoping for, I still kept turning the pages until the very end because I found that I did become invested into the characters enough that I needed to know what happens.

review plate

Wowza! First off, let me say that the first Black Knight, Inc. book was good but I really enjoyed the second book with the character’s Frank and Rebecca and was worried about how Walker was going to top that. Well, she did! Shell and Jake are wonderful characters! I loved them from the absolute start.

Jake ride in dead set on winning back Shell and he finds that it is harder than he thought it would be because Shell wants nothing to do with him besides friendship (if even that.) But then danger comes to town and Jake finds himself willing to lay down his life in order to protect Shell and her son and while doing so, he realizes all the things that he has missed about her.

While Shell’s mind knows better than to get attached to Jake, her body still longs for him and while he is assigned to protect her, Shell cannot turn off her feelings.

“Rev it up” had me sneaking out to read while I was at work because I just couldn’t get enough of it. It was action all the way though and some pretty intense feelings flying off of Jake and Shell. What really floored me where the surprises that the author threw in that I didn’t even see coming. Readers, you got to tell me if you guessed the secret or not!

I cannot wait until the fourth installment (I hope there will be a fourth.) I hope it is about Rock and Vanessa.

About the Book:

She's always been off-limits...

Former Army Special Forces Sgt. Marco Vieri has never thought of Alyssa Scott as more than his best friend's little sister, but her return home changes that...and challenges him to keep his war-borne demons at bay. Marco's not the same person he was back when he protected Alyssa from her abusive father, and he's not about to let her see the mess he's become.

...but now she's all grown up.

When Alyssa takes a job at the bar where Marco works, her carefree smiles wreak havoc on his resolve to bury his feelings. How can he protect her when he can't stop thinking about her in his bed? But Alyssa's not looking for protection—not anymore. Now that she's back in his life, she’s determined to heal her forbidden hero, one touch at a time.

review plate

Yeah, I really enjoyed this book. There was just something about it that made me race through it in a day. Maybe it was because the character Aly was just so adorable and lovable that you just wanted to be her best friend. Or it could be (and it more than likely is) the character Marco. Oh, Marco! He was he bright, shiny star in this book for me, although sometimes I wanted to punch him. His passion and want for Aly blew my mind but somehow he is strong enough to keep her at arms length because he feels like it would be better for her if she doesn’t become entangled with him. However, the character Aly is so determined to be with him that nothing matters. She is willing to take on his dark past if she can at all help him see the light. She is willing to fight for him when he won’t do it for himself.

I believe the “longing” that the two characters had for each other made this book worth the time to read for me. You know in your mind that they are perfect for each other and you so badly want them to realize it so that your heart can flutter like theirs will the moment it happens.

Deleted Scene Tour

This is an exciting tour for Anastasia Forever. As part of this tour blogger are getting the unique opportunity to post deleted scenes. Check out mine below!

anastasia forever Anastasia Forever
Book 3 of Dreaming Anastasia Series
By: Joy Preble

Synopsis:

Stories within stories. Secrets within secrets. In accepting powers from the legendary witch Baba Yaga, Anne must tackle a complex set of missions: Discover the secret of their enemy's newfound immortality; decide whether she can kill him to free her family from a vicious curse; come to terms with the magic that now resides inside her; and finally find true love with Ethan. The riveting conclusion to the trilogy that began with Dreaming Anastasia.

Deleted Scene

Here is a bit of background on the scene from Joy:

“It occurs after Anne and Ethan have found Professor Olensky murdered in his office. They are desperately trying to figure out what to do and being chased by Viktor's henchman Dimitri. And my initial impulse was that I very much wanted them to share their first kiss on that El train platform. It felt like the perfect moment -- the classic 'everything is going crazy and this is the person I've been running from but really he's exactly the right person for me' passionate kiss... followed by danger looming and breaking them apart.”

And then, we’re alone.

The wind’s whipping our hair and Ethan’s still holding my hand, our fingers lacing together. Neither of us says a word. The wind swirls a piece of newspaper around on the track and a couple of pigeons peck at the platform across the tracks, looking for bits of food.

“I’m sorry,” Ethan says as a twenty-something guy wearing an unzipped grey hoodie over his green scrubs plops himself down on the bench across the tracks and the pigeons, startled, fly off to search for other crumbs. He lets go of my hand and thrusts both his hands in his jacket pockets.

“You’re right. It is your battle. Probably as much as it is mine.” He blows out a breath.

“We were all so certain after the assassination that at any moment we could find a way to fulfill the prophecy. Get Anastasia back. Restore the Romanovs to power through her. But we didn’t. Ten years passed, then another ten. Then – well, it’s easier than you think for the years to slip by. Each time I though I’d found the girl who could do this, it turned out I was wrong. And each time, I think I just slipped a little farther from the person I used to be. The person who was so clear of his purpose. I never gave up, but I think I stopped trying as hard.”

Ethan stops. Looks down the track for a bit. There’s no train in sight. Across the way, a tall girl in a denim mini and black leggings joins scrub suit guy on his bench. She’s bobbing along to whatever is playing in her headphones. Everywhere I look, it seems, the world is going on like normal. Except I know it’s not.

Ethan’s gaze holds mine, his blue eyes so tired and sad that I feel like crying except I think I’ve used up my quota of tears today. “If Viktor’s betrayed us,” Ethan says, “it’s because I let him. Because I just stopped paying attention. And that part, I do have to bear alone.”

I’m not sure what to say to him. In fact, I’m pretty sure this is one of those times where I probably don’t need to say anything. But he’s standing there in such pain that I start talking.

“We’ll find her, Ethan,” I say, even though I’m not at all sure that’s ever really going to happen. “I mean, you found me, didn’t you?”

And then we just stand there. The wind dies down for a bit, although I can tell from the clouds that it’s going to pick up again soon. Underneath my feet I can feel a slight vibration. Far down the track, our train is coming. Ethan steps closer to me. My heart beats harder: thump, thump, hop in my chest.

I study his face. Those blue eyes. That shaggy chestnut hair all tousled from the wind.

He’s going to kiss me. And I guess it should be weird or whatever. But it’s not. It’s just me and him – and okay, the two strangers across the way – and all the other stuff just sort of drops away. Because when you’re going to kiss someone – really kiss someone – it’s got to be just about that and not anything else.

And then he does. Kiss me, I mean.

He bends down a little, cause he’s taller, and presses his lips to mine. And it’s way better than the kiss on the forehead. And way, way better than the dream kiss since this time he’s just kissing me, not trying to suck the life out of me. His lips are warm and full and sweet, and they feel good against mine.

So I kiss him back.

“I almost lost you, too,” Ethan whispers against my lips. His breath tickles and little sparks tingle their way down my spine. “Here, I’ve just found you, and I almost lost you.” We kiss some more. I reach up and wrap my arms around his neck. I rest one hand on his shoulder – right where he’s got that lion tattoo etched into his skin.

In novels, you always read phrases like ‘they kissed and time stood still.’ And until now, I’ve always thought what a load of crap that was. Cause even when I was making out with Adam Greene, time was marching right along.

And maybe it’s because Adam was a sort of slurpy kisser. And that’s why my mind kept wandering to images of Buster lapping water from his dish.

Or maybe he just wasn’t the right one.

But right now, time is still. And Ethan’s lips, and his hands that are resting against the small of my back, are filling my head so completely there’s no room for anything else.

But then our train pulls up to the platform. The doors open, and I let Ethan take my hand and lead me inside. We settle into our seats as the train gives a lurch and starts up again, headed downtown. I’m sitting next to the window. Ethan’s looking at me like I’d always hope someone who’d just kissed me would look at me.

And then he’s not. Looking at me, that is.

Because he’s looking out the window beyond me. Back over, I realize as I turn my head, to the staircase that leads up the platform we just left. Watching as the familiar figure of Dimitri rushes into view, just as the train picks up speed and carries us away.

About the Book:

After a nightmarish encounter with a werewolf, seventeen-year-old Adria Dawson loses her sister, but gains the love of a mysterious young man and his legendary family. Strange and tragic things begin to happen in the small town of Hallowell, Maine: residents come down with an unexplainable ‘illness’ and some disappear. In the midst of everything, Isaac Mayfair is adamant about keeping Adria safe, even from her sister whom he has warned her to stay away from. As unspeakable secrets unfold all around Adria, impossible choices become hers to bear. Ultimately, no matter what path she takes, her life and the lives of those she loves will be in peril. As she learns about the werewolf world she also learns why her place in it will change the destinies of many.

review plate The Mayfair Moon is not your typical werewolf story. Adria Dawson’s story is dark and terrifying journey that just happens to offer a hint of sweet romance. This was a fresh breath into the raving paranormal genre that spotlights werewolves as beastly and gruesome characters. I was instantly attracted to the storyline after Alex and Adria stumble across what appears to the be a wolf fight. From this point on the story offers a series of events that will laid both Adria and Alex in Hallowell Maine. This seemed to be where the story slows down. Everything about Hallowell is a mystery; as the occurrences seems to continue mounting Alex and Adria find themselves at odds, and eventually siding with opposing families. This entire build up was a very long and tedious section of the story. Just as slowly as the building occurs the answers will slowly be revealed. Once it appears that everything is has unfolded the story seems to rev up and quickly race through the remainder of the story. For a story based on a romance I was shocked that this relationship was lacking for much of this story. Adria and Isaac seem to be side stepping one another through the majority of this novel, and I did not feel that I really was able to grasp their love for one another till the very end.  By the conclusion of this book I was in love with their characters, and it has left me anxious to see what Kindred will have to offer. I am hoping that book two will carry a slightly quicker pace than that of this debuting novel. The potential in this novel is palpable, and after this successfully talented display I look for book two to blow me away.

Series: Black Knights Ops Book 1

The Story:
He’s the bad boy she’s always wanted...

Nate “Ghost” Weller has loved Ali Morgan nearly half his life. But he’s done something so heinous he’s convinced she’ll never forgive him if she discovers the truth, so he keeps his feelings and his secrets to himself. Then she blows into town with a mother lode of bad guys on her tail and Nate can’t deny she’s in serious trouble. Unfortunately, he’s the only one who can help her.

She’s the good girl he’s kept at arm’s length...

Ali knows Nate as the most solemn, aloof man on the planet. Sadly, he’s also the sexiest. For years she’s avoided him, unable to stomach his dark scowls and brooding silences… especially when she secretly yearns for his touch. Now she must rely on him to save her from the malevolent shadows ghosting her every move. When the bullets explode, so does their passion. But can love really conquer all? Or are some things just too terrible to forgive?

What is so glorious about special ops military men? I don't know, but please give me more. I loved everything about this story from the characters all the way down to the chop shop. It was a rollercoaster of emotion with the added incentive of not only one steamy and intense romance, but the building of yet another. I must actually admit that I find myself more drawn to Becky's character a little more than Ali, but please don't let me miss lead she was a rocking character as well. She is far from your typical girl, and I loved how over the length of this book she transforms from a small town school teacher to a independent and borderline dangerous young woman. Nate "Ghost" Weller is the male lead character, and he along with Ali brother have worked for an independent special ops contractor for several years. With the cover of a custom Chopper Shop; they have successfully mislead everyone they know. Except maybe Ali! Then Nate must return home to deliver news of Griggs death. This begins the story, and rolls into a chain of events that bring Ali to Nate front door. It seems far more sinister hands are at play, and everything is not what it appears. With Ali on the compound Nate will be forced to recognize his feelings, and acknowledge Ali for more than his best friends little sister. I cannot tell you enough how much I loved this story. This is the first novel for the Black Knights series, and it was so entertaining to meet every one of the characters. Every single one is incredible, and I am looking forward to seeing what is in store for each one. As I said earlier I found myself a sucker for Becky and Boss, so the next book is one I can't wait to start. For romance fans that adore some action packed story lines this is the book for you! About the Book:

An immortal war has been brewing in the darkness . . . And now one woman has stumbled into the shadows.
Chicago private investigator Kira Graceling should have just kept on walking. But her sense of duty refused to let her ignore the moans of pain coming from inside a warehouse just before dawn. Suddenly she finds herself in a world she's only imagined in her worst nightmares.
At the center is Mencheres, a breathtaking Master vampire who thought he'd seen it all. Then Kira appears, this fearless, beautiful . . . human who braved death to rescue him. Though he burns for her, keeping Kira in his world means risking her life. Yet sending her away is unthinkable.
But with danger closing in, Mencheres must choose either the woman he craves, or embracing the darkest magic to defeat an enemy bent on his eternal destruction.

review plateMencheres has not been one of my favorite characters through the Vampire Huntress Series, and knowing this has obviously made me reluctant to review this title. My foremost concern was that due to my bias I would not be able to review this title effectively. So, here is to one of many times that an incredible author has proven me entirely wrong. Frost takes this slightly shady character, and transforms him into a dedicated and companionate personality that will dissolve fans previous impressions. After many years of uncertainty, I found myself falling head over heals in love this newly developed character. What had always seemed a character of mystery is finally unfolded to allow readers a more in-depth look into his true self. Even more surprising, I was captivated and overwhelmed by Frost’s newest addition. Kira is such a strong and independent character that will shock and awe fans due to her abundant comparisons to the beloved Cat. I was enticed by this character from the start; rooting for the power and intensity that seemed to be simmering under her cool exterior. True to her talent, Frost combines these amazing characters offering an addictive and spell binding love story that readers will crave. As part of the Night Huntress World spin off series this should be the only novel highlighting this couple, but I am anxious for their appearances in novels to come. Frost will knock readers socks of yet again with this action packed and thrilling adventure.
