About the book
When struggling waitress Melody Dylan gives a handsome, lonely stranger a simple gift she has no clue her life is about to take a drastic turn.

The stranger ends up being Clay Powers, a famous UFC heavyweight fighter. Clay’s large build and dangerous fists have always intimidated. People in his hometown keep their distance and Clay is fine with that. Everything changes when a new waitress at the local diner buys him a piece of pie on thanksgiving. Touched by the gesture when it’s obvious she can barely afford to survive, her warm smile and lush body churn up powerful feelings that leave Clay wanting more from her than pie.

Melody is running from her past and the small, country town of Garnet is the perfect hiding place. With an ex-husband after her and scars from her abusive marriage etched deep, the last thing she expects is to fall for a man who makes a living with his fists, but she can’t resist Clay or the tender connection they share.

Finding love in the most unlikely of places, the passion is undeniable, but Clay and Melody know their haunted pasts and unpredictable futures leave the odds stacked against them.

~BookWhisperer Review MC~
I loved this story.  It is the kind of story that makes you long for a kind of love that Melody and Clay have together.  Both of their pasts are dark but yet they can still see that the future can be bright, and it can be brighter with each other.  You like Mel’s character because she is a simple woman that gets a chance to start again and you LOVE Clay’s character because he is enamored with her from the second he lays eye on her. You read this book wanting the best to happen for the both of them, but like real life, problems come up and they must overcome them.

~BookWhisperer Reviewer JO~
This was such an incredible story. On first notice the hot and steamy relationship between Mel and Clay will obviously have your attention, but I was awestruck by the amazing story that was included. Mel is a courageous and optimistic person that readers will thoroughly enjoy. While Clay is gruff and reclusive, but once that two characters combine they form a bond of perfection. These two characters are definitively broken and battered hearts, and readers will gobble up a story that offers these victims love and happiness.

This author has made a drastic impression on me, and I will be looking for more. Her writing style is blunt and and honest, but she creates the story in such a way that good or bad you can look away. Defying the Odds was an exceptional display of just what this author is capable of. BookWhisperer Recommended!!

About the book:
Destiny has a way of catching up. Saddled with powers she doesn’t understand, Etta Fleming’s world is turned upside-down the day she meets Cooper Everett, the man who transports her to an alternate reality. A reality she was meant to be a part of. One minute, she’s an orphan living at Dominion House for Girls, an institution for delinquent foster kids, and then finds herself attending the exclusive Dominion Hall Academy. Plucked from the only world she’s ever known, Etta now has to deal with an aunt she never knew, a boyfriend she doesn’t know, and a best friend who can’t know. PARALLEL is the first book in The Travelers Series.

I think that The Travelers Series is going to be a potentially great series to read.  To me, it is a whole new concept of books that I haven’t seen anywhere else.  Etta is living one life as an orphan but finds out that she doesn’t belong in that world. She has a life in another world that she has longed for, but she is thrown into it with memories of her past and no memories of this present world.  This is such a great concept to start a series and I like how the author wrote Etta’s personality; mature but fun.  I also enjoyed the dynamic banter between Etta and the mysterious Cooper.  I am excited to see what the second book brings.  Try this book out and watch out for the kicker in the very last line.

Blog Tour: In the Spotlight

Elizabeth offers a guest post about her book for The BookWhisperer today. Check it out below. In the Spotlight 200 x 300

Sometimes I get asked if I am a plotter or a pantser in regards to my writing. A plotter is fairly self-explanatory.  Plotters use some form of an outline to guide their work. A pantser, on the other hand, “flies by the seat of their pants.” These people are in their element when they allow themselves to follow their story with no concrete plan ahead of time.

I suspect that most people are like me in that they often work from a combination of these. All of my books have varied on the way I have written them. For my first published novel, In the Spotlight, I was definitely in pantser mode. I wrote whatever scenes came into my head so I wouldn’t forget even one. The problem with this approach was that I had to spend a lot of time bridging scenes, and fixing timeline issues. The exciting part was not quite knowing where the story was headed, and finding out things as my characters did.Currently I am working on a manuscript that I am attempting to be in plotter mode on. So far, however, I am incomplete pantser mode. No matter how hard I try, I can’t commit an outline to paper. I am far more excited to simply see where the story takes me, although I have a good idea where the story will end up. And so, yet again I find myself as a combination pantser-plotter.

Synopsis of In the Spotlight:

When sixteen year old Hannah Brewster lands the lead in the school musical she hopes it will be the perfect chance to get the attention of her family and her long time crush, Kyle. The only problem is that school super star, Josh Larson, has been cast opposite her, and he seems to like her as more than just a cast mate.
As Hannah and Josh grow closer, things between Hannah and Kyle get complicated. When Hannah realizes that Kyle is not who she thought he was, she also realizes that she just might like Josh as more than just a friend.
Will Hannah and Josh be able to overcome their obstacles and admit their feelings before the musical ends?

Excerpt:
“You really want to know?” I replied.
“I do,” Josh said, crossing his arms and leaning back in his chair, that stupid smirk still
on his face.
“I put down all the girls you talk about because all the girls you talk about are…skanks. And I don’t like you. I could never like you because you are a conceited jerk. And you know what else? I thought that was because you were Mr. Big Man on Campus football star legend of the school, but it’s not. That’s just who you are.”
I stood up so fast my chair slammed against the wall. People from several surrounding tables glanced our way, but I didn’t care. I just wanted to get out of the cafeteria as fast as possible. As I fled I was acutely aware of all the eyes following me. Somehow I managed to make it to the choir room before collapsing into a chair.
A horrible realization hit me as buckets of ice cold air from the newly installed air conditioning system dumped on me from the vents in the ceiling. I liked Josh. But that was impossible because I clearly disliked Josh. You can’t have it both ways, I argued with myself. And yet, here I was nursing both the biggest grudge and the biggest crush of all time.
Maybe even bigger than the crush I had on Kyle. And how did that fit into all of this? I still had monster feelings for Kyle. Who wouldn’t? We were getting so much closer now that musical rehearsals had started. I mean, why would he offer me private coaching sessions if he didn’t feel something for me? I had a little suspicion though that Kyle might not be the only one with feelings for me. Why would Josh want me to be jealous of all his skanky little conquests unless he liked me, too? And did I want Josh to like me back? Just because he might possibly, potentially like me back, that didn’t mean that anything was going to happen between us. I mean, I certainly wasn’t going to make the first move, and if that little display back in the lunch room had been Josh’s idea of a first move, the two of us would obviously get nowhere fast.

And did I even want Josh to like me? Hadn’t I spent the past three years trying to get Kyle to fall madly, deeply in love with me? Or at least wishing that he would? How on earth could I focus on accomplishing a goal like that when another boy was taking up my time? Seriously, what was wrong with me? I felt like I was turning into Claudia. And speaking of Claudia, what was going on with her and Kyle anyway? One day they seemed to be in the throes of a heated affair, and the next day they could barely stand the sight of each other.

About the book:

Kate and Vincent have overcome the odds and at last they are together in Paris, the city of lights and love.
As their romance deepens there’s one question they can’t ignore: How are they supposed to be together if Vincent can’t resist sacrificing himself to save others? Although Vincent promises that he’ll do whatever it takes to lead a normal life with Kate, will that mean letting innocent people die? When a new and surprising enemy reveals itself, Kate realizes that even more may be at stake—and that Vincent’s immortality is in jeopardy.
In Die for Me, Amy Plum created a captivating paranormal mythology with immortal revenants and a lush Paris setting. Until I Die is poised to thrill readers with more heart-pounding suspense, spellbinding romance, and a cliff-hanger ending that will leave them desperate for the third and final novel in the series.

Reviews Plate Kate and Vincent will carry readers through another whirl wind adventure with this second book in the Revenants series. This book did seem to start off at a slower pace, but it seems that as the story builds in intrigue and mystery readers will be swept away by their story yet again. It having been such a long time since reading Die for Me, I did have to play a little catch up with this book, and I appreciate the history detail that was creatively placed throughout the start of this story. Vincent and his kind are very unique in the paranormal genre. This being the first series that has displayed this particular species it a fresh and creative twist to this booming genre. Until I Die keeps the story pretty start forward, although, it does harbor secrets. I look forward to seeing how several of this developments will play out in the next installment of the Revenants series. Amy Plum is a very talented author, and one that I will definitely be keeping my eye on. BOOKWHISPERER RECOMMENDED SERIES!!!

About the book:

Veronica Cruz has been through hell and back. After disconnecting with the world two years ago to be at the side of her dying mother, she’s left alone, unemployed, overweight, and feeling a decade older than her twenty-eight years. When her best friend coaxes her into joining the local gym to ditch her depression and rejuvenate her life, she meets Noah. Assigned to help Veronica lose weight, Noah is everything she expected a young trainer to be—perfectly chiseled, supportive and motivating. Add to that, he’s incredibly sexy. He’s everything she’s ever looked for in a man. What she least expected was for him to fall for her, but he has. There's just one glaring problem: Noah is eight years younger.
Noah Quintanilla has his eye on a boxing title—someday. Down for a few months with an injury, his maintenance-boy pay at 5th Street Gym won't cut it. He’s finally given the opportunity to train. The catch? His trainee is an out-of-shape woman with a free week pass. Taking on the challenge, Noah stumbles into one of the closest friendships he’s ever known, and before he knows it, he’s in love. But Veronica’s not having it—the age difference is too much. Their platonic relationship means having to watch her date other men—something that would make him crazy. Believing he's the man for her, Noah sets out to prove that age is but an illusion, and there's more to him than just a number.

Reviews Plate As you followers know recently BookWhisperer has expanded to a joint effort. As avid book devours I have partnered up with Miranda for reviewing here on The BookWhisperer. Thus you are not observing our first compromise. We are both dedicated Elizabeth fans. I have read every book from the Moreno series, as has Miranda and in attempted to avoid blood and tears we are both going to review Noah.

~JO BookWhisperer Reviewer~
As a dedicated fan to the Moreno series I know that any fan of Elizabeth Reyes will want the answer to one essential question; how does this series measure to the Moreno's series? All I can say is be prepared to fall in love all over again. Noah and Veronica are two amazing characters, and the sparks that fly when they collide will leave readers craving even more. The age difference was quite a unique aspect to build this story, but it really worked and I absolutely loved it. Noah being an adopted child and seeing so much at such a young age really evened the scale for these two characters. Once Veronica could see what she was missing it was all over for the both of them. This particular book was more like Always be Mine (book 1 Moreno series) with the story detail and slower pace as you build the characters and story from scratch, but I am hoping to see the series push on just like the other and build with each additional book. Reyes promises all of the same intensity and drive that we have come to love, and will leave you begging for the next book to hurry up and get here. I see that the next book is about Gio, and I this has me thrilled. As with the most recent Moreno novel that spotlights Sal; I am overly anxious for Gio's book with their similar personalities. Both of these characters exude a persona of quite and deadly; this make such a bitter sweet story when you get to see the peeling back of their layers. BOOKWHISPERER RECOMMENDATION!!!! BOOKWHISPERER FAVORITE SERIES!!!!!

I second everything that Jackie wrote about “Noah” by Elizabeth Reyes.  As soon as Jackie told me that Reyes had a new book out, I needed it and I immediately knew that it was going to be wonderful. It wasn’t let down.  If you liked/loved the Moreno brothers series, then you will feel the same way about “Noah.”

I appreciated how Reyes made the characters struggle and cover up the their feelings for each other until they were about to bust from the seams.  I added the character Noah to my list of fictional husbands (which also includes Alex and Sal.)

A MUST read!

About the book:

Anne Mason thinks she’ll be safe in the Midwest building a wind farm. She may be dead wrong. Someone is dumping bodies in her corn field and telling Anne they are gifts – for her!

As the body count rises, Anne realizes a cold-blooded serial killer is patiently waiting and watching her every move – and he won’t stop until he ends her life. It is clear there are no limits to this killer’s thirst for revenge or how far he will go to get it.

After a nasty divorce, Anne Mason does not want to get romantically involved, especially with ex-husband’s attorney, Michael Brandt.

The ruggedly handsome new County Prosecutor is the last person Anne can trust, but may offer her only chance at survival from a psychopathic killer. But will she survive the passion that rages between them?

Reviews Plate

Anne’s days just keep getting worse.  She is in the middle of a divorce, her soon to be ex-husband’s attorney is extremely handsome and to make matters worse, he saved her from a drunken man last night while she was at a bar and now she is sitting across the table from him at the divorce hearing.  Anne is beyond angry when she finds out that Michael is representing her ex but she can’t help but secretly be attracted to him.

To start a new life after her divorce, Anne decides to give her ex everything he wants while she takes over Golden Acres Farm.  Once she arrives, she starts to feels like she is living  a new chapter in her life, until she finds that Michael is her next-door neighbor.  She tries to stay away from him but he is determined to be in her life especially after a body is found on the farm, as a gifted present to her.  Throughout this book, Michael works to keep Anne safe and to find her stalker before he can get to Anne.

My favorite thing about Deadly Offerings was the relationship between Michael and Anne.  She wants absolutely nothing to do with him while he wants everything to do with her.  She pushes him back and he pulls her forward and somewhere in the middle a spark was created and feelings start to bubble.  The feelings between them make it hard for the characters because Anne wants to be strong during these horrible events and protect, not only Michael’s life, but also his career, thus she pushes him away.  However, Michael cannot leave her side for the fear that something might happen to her and he wouldn’t be there to safe her.

I was constantly wondering who this killer was, what connection he had with Anne, and why he targeted her.  This book was a good and quick read. ~MC BookWhisperer Reviewer~

Kindles for Kids

What exactly is Kindles for Kids?

Kindles for Kids is my way of paying it forward. My goal is to raise enough funds to purchase 10 Kindle Fires for the pediatric unit of a local hospital in UT.

How does Kindles for Kids work?

From March 12th-31st of 2012, I will be donating the *royalties I make on THE FAIRY GODMOTHER DILEMMA: CATSPELL--both in paper and e-book form--toward the purchase of the Kindle Fires.

Royalties are paid a month to two months after the fact. Factoring in that as well as putting in the order, receiving them, and getting them ready, I will be delivering the Kindle Fires to the hospital in June of 2012.

How can you participate?

If you are an author (published) or a writer (unpublished), this link will explain it more. A more detailed link can be found here. In short, I'm hosting an open call for donating **books you have the rights to for the hospital. One book per Kindle Fire. You can also participate by writing a ***short story for a fairy tale anthology I'm putting together for the hospital. If you're a reader, this link will give you a few ideas on how to help spread the word.

How can you help?

The greatest help of all is to help me get the word out. You can do this by talking to people--online and in real life, posting about Kindles for Kids on forums, groups, on your blog, and by printing out and posting fliers. More detailed link here, as well as details for a photo contest. Link for the flyer here.

I can't do this without you, so thank you to all who participate in any way they can!

*Royalties up to 249,000 copies. After that, I have to buy an extended license for the photographs I use for the cover.

**All books will be vetted by me personally for both formatting and content. Since the Kindle Fires are going to the pediatric unit, I would ask that any donations are formatted and edited well, and that they go no higher than a PG rating.

***As with the books, please keep the short stories at a PG or G rating. Again, all stories that are chosen for inclusion in the anthology will be vetted by me personally. Also, because digital copies of the anthology will be donated to the hospitals, and there will be no money made off of them, neither the editor (me) nor the authors will receive payment or money for them. However, everyone who is included will receive a digital copy as either a PDF, a kindle file, or epub.

Ash's Letter to Meghan

OMG!! How did I not know that there even was a Letter to Meghan out there?! I just finished reading it, and that was so incredibly sweet. I love Ash! It was also brought to my attention that Julie Kagawa has posted a book five for the series. What!?! I thought Iron Knight was the end? Well it turns out that Julie is writing a book five that will be from Ethan's point of view in the future. I wonder how that will turn out. You best believe that I will be checking it out though.

This author is amazing.. I am so itching to get my hands on Immortal Rules. Let's see how she does with Vampires. Any rate, enough rambling. I will let you know how it all turns out I'm sure!

About the book:

The first time they broke each other’s hearts. Now they have a second chance… Doing what was expected didn’t get Anna Morelli anything but a bad marriage. Now that her life has fallen apart there’s only one place she can think of to regroup and figure out what comes next. Two Willows, the winery owned by the only man she could ever rely on. Her oldest friend. And her worst mistake. Growing up as the poor boy didn’t stop Jace Willow from falling for Anna one hot, sultry summer. Back then, his best efforts to prove himself worthy of the Morelli standard fell just short. While it killed him to see her marry someone else, he made beating the Morellis at their own game his life’s work. And he’s excelled at it. When Anna shows up on his doorstep, their painful history pales in the face of her need for a roof over her children’s heads—and some peace. The heat of their renewed passion is healing, but it burns away layers of hard-won emotional distance, reopening old wounds. Threatening their one last chance to rebuild their love on the shattered pieces of their broken hearts…

Breathe is a story about love and loss. As a young couple their love was a failure, but now after years of heartache and regret Anna finds herself at his doorstep once more. Years have changed them in more ways than one, and the baggage that Anna brings may just be more than Jace can handle. Never having married his is quite used to his bachelor lifestyle, but children have a funny way of leaving their mark when we least expect it. With their mountain of history that has left them both with aggression this situation quickly escalates into a steamy and frustrating tug of war. As the story unfolds so do their hearts; leaving Anna and Jace to sort through emotions and misunderstandings that have caused havoc in their lives for many years. If only they could see past theirselves they might see this to be a second chance at happiness. This was a very easy and light read. The emotion is soft and steady that will allow reads to quick slide through the story carelessly.

Things begin to heat up between him and Grace, but then the ever-perfect Sal does something even his brothers never did—screws up royally. Now he’s scrambling to cover up a mistake he knows could cost him dearly. As his relationship with Grace grows even more serious, Sal's secret is a ticking bomb, threatening to destroy the one thing he now lives and breathes for—his relationship with the love of his life—Grace.

review plate

I have been a fan of the Moreno Brothers series for the duration. Every book as had its unique and thrilling journey of lust and love. Admittedly, I was shocked when I couldn't get into the last book Romero, but now reflecting I think it may have had solely due to my inability to connect with this particular character. Even so, I was desperately hoping that making you mine would restore my love for this series and help me overcome the frustration that I had with the one book. I was thrilled to find that I was captivated from the start of Making You Mine, and found myself so completely engross that I finished this book in one sitting. Sal is a character that every reader has been following, and waiting to see his turn come round. With his quiet and tranquil personality it is exhilarating to see him get his feathers in a ruffle, and step into the lime light for a change. These main characters were breath taking in this book for lack of better words, and I would have to say this book turned out to be by far my absolute favorite of the series. While the other books focus on the growing of a relationship and two lovers coming together; this one seems to offer so much more with the progression of the novel and the baggage that Grace walks into this relationship with. That being said, Grace is far from the typically girl and I was in love with her character from the start.  This young girl’s life was a tragedy, and I was rooting for this relationship for not only her happiness but also for her safety. This book offers the growth of a family, as well as, a mouthwatering romance.  Never have a seen a better match than Grace and Sal not only in character, but for such an esteemed man to find a woman like Grace as pure as a white rose. This added to the pristine image that Reyes was building, and I think it was an excellent display in talent from this author. After concluding book five have some anticipations on who will be taking center stage in books to come, and I am anxious to see if my assumptions will prove correct. This is an awesome series that just keeps giving us more.

About the book:

Publicist Allison Morris plans her own life – what’s left of it – around the life of her boss Michelle McCarter, the ex-wife of a famous rock star. When Michelle needs emergency public relations patchwork in Hawaii pronto, Allison arranges a flight to the dream destination. At the airport, she meets Wes Hamilton, a six-foot-three sun-bleached blond whose blue eyes and dazzling smile rekindle her fizzled-out sizzle. A world-renowned surfer, Wes captivates her with his charm and wit, though his easy fame and on-the-edge lifestyle are the polar opposite of her own.
When their jet loses its fuselage in mid-air, she takes advantage of what she thinks are her last minutes alive with Wes. The plane lands safely. Wes takes care of her when her carefully constructed life begins to unravel. When Michelle accuses Allison of using Wes to gain fame for herself, Allison’s world falls apart in an explosive confrontation. Wes is waiting with open arms when she has nowhere else to go, but can Allison learn to stop planning and go with gravity?

review plateFast and passionate! Going with Gravity is a very short story full of passion. Allison is a publicist for a monstrous celebrity. Spending all of her time cleaning up various messes that her client creates has become quite a demanding job. The current disaster requiring her attention has her on a plane destined for Hawaii. Allison wishes that just once she would find the time to stop and look around; instead of creating and building lies to cover whatever careless and reckless situation her client has created. When she finds herself seated next to the famous Wes Hamilton little did she know that her life was about to change. This incredibly fast read promises a promiscuous encounter in the plane bathroom, as well as, a building intensity will carry readers through the final pages. Cate Masters builds character that enticing readers support throughout. My sole complaint is the desire for more; which only adds to my expression that this was a great read.

Will the creature Marissa seeks save her? Will she be lost forever in the eddies of her mind, or will Jim, her new boyfriend, keep her from drowning in the abyss?

Where Does Callie find her inspiration for writing such an incredible story. Callie has created a Ten Top List for her favorite locations. Check it out below!

  1. Hiking through the forest, especially if it's misty, which it often is here in the Northwest.
  2. In my hot tub. I seriously zone out with all that steam. Plus, it's in my backyard and surrounded by huge trees.
  3. Driving. The commute is good, but those longer drives along the Columbia river or the Coast Range are even better. Something about the trees . . .
  4. The bedroom. (People, please behave). One of my favorite writing spots is propped in bed. My windows have a wonderful view of . . . you guessed it, huge evergreens.
  5. At the beach. Here in Oregon, much of the coastline, such as at Ecola, feature headlands where the forest overlooks the sea.
  6. In the bath or shower. Partly steam, partly mindless soaking. One thing missing: trees.
  7. At the coffee shop, sipping a cappuccino. Steam again. Plus caffeine, a brilliant combination.
  8. Walking dogs through the neighborhood. Lots of big trees. It's Oregon, after all.
  9. On the sofa, watching the rain fall. On the trees. Mist is sort of like steam, I guess, or maybe it's the other way around.
  10. Anywhere quiet, peaceful, and near greenery. Lots of that here.
Thank you Callie for taking the time to make up this list, and it has been a pleasure to participate in your tour.

About the book:

In the sequel, Maggie learns much more about all the strange things that happened to her, and has to face new ones. She rebels against it, but ultimately, must face it for her new families sake and maybe even her life. Bish went from being her biggest supporter to her biggest pain in the butt and Kyle's intentions to attract her interest may not be so innocent. Caleb and Maggie face many new obstacles together and fight to work through them but will one that should be a good thing be too much for Maggie to handle? (From Goodreads)

Reviews Plate Accordance is the second installment to the Significance series. This series offers a unique twist of a fated lovers and superheroes powers. Maggie and Caleb take center stage, but it appears the family is beginning to grow. For generations it had appeared that a terrible tragedy was occurring, and the families were no longer imprinting. With such complications the families discourages dating and romance with anyone else other than ones imprinted, because if they were to one day find their significant things will instantly become messy. So, at the time it appeared with the lack of imprinting generations we destined to be along. That was until Maggie saved Caleb from an unfortunate accident. Now, they are not only imprinted; but Maggie is also a human and this has never been heard of before. At the end of the Significance we followed Maggie and Caleb to California. In attempts to hide from those determined to harm Maggie; they flee only to find they are under the supervision of one overbearing brother and one meddlesome cousin. This allowed a moment for some major character and romance depth to be adding into the story. This was a much need transition to go from the unknown fresh romance to a deep and a devoted partnership between Caleb and Maggie. Unfortunately, with a novel such as this the abruptness of the imprinting between characters can leave readers feel pressured romance, and a constant feeling of catching up as the author builds relationships after the fact. I thoroughly enjoy this series, and love the unique and imaginative journey within each book. I have noticed a few disruptions in the flow, but I think this is primarily the learning curve for this author. It appears that she is still having a few moments of romance that will sound entirely to cliché. With a novel surrounding romance this will give readers moments of pause within the story, but is easily overlooked. Overall, with two books of the Significance series under her belt I see improvement, and I am anxious to see where the future will take us.
