SOMETHING DARKER (book one of the Inferii Dii)

The one thing Syrus Alcot, the God of Death Osiris in the Egyptian Pantheon, wants in all the worlds is the woman he loved and lost returned to him. When he gave up his powers, and freedom for a life of service he was promised her return. That was over one thousand years ago. A member of a team of dark gods charged with keeping humanity safe, he leads a loveless existence in New York City, searching for the one thing that could bring his wife back to him, a lapis scarab that was lost to him ages before.

Gwen Stapleton, a mild mannered librarian, is unaware that she holds the key to not only Syrus’ happiness, but her own. Seemingly stuck in a hopeless relationship with a man she doesn’t love, she has no idea that a chance meeting in Alphabet City will start a landslide to her heart’s content. Because Gwen is the keeper of the scarab, and is everything Syrus has ever wanted… and hes not the only one.

An Ancient evil is waking, and its servants will stop at nothing to see it seize its rightful place as the new pantheon of earth. And in order for Syrus and his team to save the world, Gwen is going to have to accept him, and show that love does make all the difference.

Review: Thoughtless by SC Stephens

thoughtless

Title: Thoughtless

By: S.C. Stephens

Series: Thoughtless #1

My Copy: Ebook from Edelweiss

BookWhisperer Rating:

four books

For almost two years now, Kiera's boyfriend, Denny, has been everything she's ever wanted: loving, tender and endlessly devoted to her. When they head off to a new city to start their lives together, Denny at his dream job and Kiera at a top-notch university, everything seems perfect. Then an unforeseen obligation forces the happy couple apart.
Feeling lonely, confused, and in need of comfort, Kiera turns to an unexpected source—a local rock star named Kellan Kyle. At first, he's purely a friend that she can lean on, but as her loneliness grows, so does their relationship. And then one night everything changes...and none of them will ever be the same.

our thoughts finlThoughtless by SC Stephens has made list after list for amazing romance stories. While I must now completely agree I feel that I had to be a realist, and rate it accordingly to every aspect of the book. It would be easy to rate this book five stars based on the intense scandalous romance, but when you review as many books as I do it is imperative that you look at all of the details, and not just the ones that rock your world. Kiera and Kellan story is AMAZING! Many lesson teach us that the strict reality of right from wrong, but Thoughtless takes everything that we have learned and twists it around leaving readers in the gray area of confusion. Even the most moral conscious readers will be second guessing their own beliefs and actions when they find themselves siding with the antagonists of this story. Kiera is young and naive; following her boyfriend across country after two years is brave and stupid, but with a mission she finds herself packed up and on a road trip across the states moving toward a new life. While I admit Kiera has been with Denny for two years, but maturity teaches that anything can happen. It is in this story that we will see just how much is in entailed with ANYTHING! Looking for a fresh start also leaves them moving in with a roommate. A life long friend of Denny is spectacular for offer the couple his extra room charging little to nothing for rent. Kellan is a up and coming musician that will also plan a large starring role in this story. What starts out a easy friendship for the trio turns into a promiscuous story of love and hate. The journey will drag you through the highs and lows of consequences, but it will wrap all of the characters into and deep and dedicated read. With all of this being said if I was reviewing primarily on these details this story would be a five star, but when I deeply study the detail of path this story took I had a little concern. Once Kiera and Kellan romance blossoms there is a huge part of this story that seemed to be wandering. I spent many pages wondering where exactly we would going with this story, and just when the bottom was going to fall out. This can make a portion of the story taxing and tedious. Not to mention in a story that readers will cringe with frustration at the character it is desperate time that can suffer if drug out too long. This alone can cause some serious struggle in readers, and for it alone I could not justify a five star rating. I say this with a heavy heart, because truly this journey was incredible, but I it was a large enough concern that I felt it dishonest if I do not mention it. Even with this small set back I am addicted. I love this characters and the setting. I love the detail and creativity that this wonderfully talented author displays with splendor. Series: Reaper Diaries Book 1

My Copy: Ebook from Author

BookWhisperer Rating:

four books

The day I turned 16, my boyfriend-to-be died. I brought him back to life. Then things got a little weird...
Molly Bartolucci wants to blend in, date hottie Rick and keep her zombie-raising abilities on the down-low. Then the god Anubis chooses her to become a reaper-and she accidentally undoes the work of another reaper, Rath. Within days, she’s shipped off to the Nekyia Academy, an elite school that trains the best necromancers in the world. And her personal reaping tutor? Rath. Who seems to hate her guts.
Rath will be watching closely to be sure she completes her first assignment-reaping Rick, the boy who should have died. The boy she still wants to be with. To make matters worse, students at the academy start turning up catatonic, and accusations fly-against Molly. The only way out of this mess? To go through hell. Literally.

our thoughts finl

Zombie's are making a run on the Paranormal genre, but personally I feel that they are a better categorized by the scifi genre. They stand out from the remainder of species in the genre, and I have always felt that I could not entertain the concept. UNTIL NOW!!

Undeadly was an incredibly complex storyline that must overcome a few obstacles. The intricate web that builds this story required a ton of information to create this intriguing world. All of this information is essential from the start of the story which leaves readers with a lot of information to grasp in very few pages. The result will leave readers questioning the future of the story. With minimal dedication I pushed through these first few chapters, and found the story fall at my feet. Once the details are all laid out the story took off fast, and wrapped me into the pages.

This world is unlike anything I have seen before with a perfect mixture of Reapers, Zombie, Ghosts, and Gods. Lightly wrapped in what seems to be a bit of mythology I was captivated and enthralled by the remainder of the story. I take Molly as a very loner character; that just wants to be accepted for who she is. When she finds herself in a dream with Anubis is safe to assume that her life is always going to be extraordinary. To be perfectly honest, I was happy for Molly when Rick began showing attraction to her, but something just always did not settle well with me on the Rick front. From the start I was more drawn by Rath's character. As the story unfolded I was even more excited to see the palpable attraction between their two characters. I look forward to seeing where their relationship will lead in book two.

The developments over this entire book were colossal, and has set the standard for every book to come. After a rocky beginning I was deeply pulled into Undeadly, and hope that this series can continue the momentum throughout. This will not be an easy book to overcome, and hopefully the few obstacles present with this story will not reappear in the next installment.

Against all odds, Nick and Clea must find their way back to the summer they were young lovers on the beach in Port Bliss, realizing that together their love is strong, strong enough to survive anything, even the web of lies that separated them ten years ago.

our thoughts finlI was so excited to hear from this author, and have the opportunity to have the first official review for this title. Falling For Nick is a tail spin of lies and betrayals all wrapped up into one love story. Clea and Nick were always fighting against all odds from the very start. Him being a rough neck from the wrong side of town, and her being the prestigious daughter that was born with a silver spoon. One night of unadulterated passion leads to wrong place at the wrong time. The result has left Nick with a ten year prison sentence, and Clea has spent the last ten years raising their son alone. What was once considered to be young and in love is about to be proven wrong yet again.Even with Clea engaged Nick is determined for fight for his family. This is an awesome read for mothers with our deep seeded love for family and children. BookWhisperer Rating:

Ethan Blackstone has problems. He's broken the trust of the woman he loves and she's left him because of it. Ethan isn't giving up though--he's determined to get his girl back. Their passion together was explosive, but their secrets are even darker and more frightening. With political threats directed at Brynne, Ethan has no choice but to fight for her, to win her love, and to protect her from the very dangers that could take her away from him forever. He’s willing to risk everything to have Brynne and to keep her safe. He’ll go all in…

our thoughts finlAll In is book 2 in The Blackstone Affair. It picks up immediately following the conclusion of book one; which is reassuring due to the dramatic cliffhanger that Miller left us with. These are both incredibly short stories, so it is easy to say that this book was primarily the overcome of the secrets from the Naked. There was a switch, and Ethan takes lead in this story giving readers a sweltering read. Unlike the first book that offered much more of a story this was more of a sexual book with a little bit of story. My personal opinion I was mildly discouraged by this development, because I deeply loved the intensity and power behind book one. I can honestly see that this was the storyline used to tie these characters deeply, and I hope that it was its purpose. That leaves me with hope that book three will pick up with this powerful storyline that I adored previously. There was a flurry of secrets laid bare in this short read giving us all the details that we were craving. With Ethan and Brynne stories on the table it is easy to understand and relate to their characters. My prediction leaves me expecting incredible action in the next installment, and I adore watching this delectable man when the action starts unfolding.

Review: Confession of an Alli Cat by Courtney Cole

confessions of an alli cat

Title: Confessions of an Alli Cat

By: Courtney Cole

Series: The Cougar Chronicles #1

My Copy: Ebook from Author

BookWhisperer Rating:

five books

Thirty-five year-old Allison “Alli” Lancaster has it all—a fabulous job, a beautiful 15 year-old daughter, a hilarious BFF and a gorgeous house with a pool and Jacuzzi in an exclusive Las Vegas neighborhood. What she doesn’t have is a husband, because she kicked her lousy, cheating ex to the curb nine months ago. Since then, Alli has paid her dues with seemingly endless self-improvement and seemingly endless mourning. Now she’s ready to move on and try new things.

Alli’s idea of “trying new things” is nothing like that devil-of-a-best-friend of hers. Somehow, Sara, the devil of a best friend, talks Alli into trying out a sex toy, sleeping with a younger man and letting a stranger in a lab jacket put hot wax on a place that should never, ever, ever see wax. And that’s only the beginning.

Alli never saw her life going quite like this. She also never thought she’d meet someone else who had the very real potential to change her life forever.

But she did.

Enter the new guy. He’s gorgeous, refined and mature. He’s also marriage material. But that poses a problem for Alli, who renounced the institution of marriage when she renounced her ex.

What’s a girl to do?

They say that what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. But what the heck happens when you can’t leave Vegas? Well, you spin the wheel, of course. You play the game and let the chips fall where they may.

Alli just hopes she can find them all.

our thoughts finl

Hilarious! This whole book had me laughing from page one straight through to the very last page. Alli is just like most woman when life seems to take over. When we no longer recognize ourselves because the mundane tasks of being a mother, wife, and career woman take over every aspect of our lives. Alli is at this point; she no longer even recognizes herself anymore. At a moments notice her life is completely uprooted when she uncovers her husband infidelity has spanned the majority of their 15 years married. He suddenly becomes downgraded from husband to "Rick the Dick". This leaves her at a crossroads, and Alli must decide if she is going to take back her life or continue to let it rule her unhappy world. With the help of Sarah she grabs life by the "balls" it is a humorous and embarrassing journey, but I loved every minute of it. This story will make you laugh, snicker, and blush with every page. The overall journey to "crazy town" is a story that mothers/wives will enjoy if you have the ability to accept it as the FUN story that it is. This was an incredible start for a series, and I am on board to finished it out. If every other book is half as good as this debut novel it will be one hell of a series.

Cressenda knows how to survive. With her sled dogs as her only companions, she’s spent the past ten years hiding in the snow covered wilderness from the oppressive regime of the Affinity. When a routine trip to civilization takes a turn for the worst, Cressenda is forced to take refuge with the enemy or lose her life to the frozen countryside.
But Beckett, a Guard of the Affinity, is more than a man in uniform. His desperate need to help Cressenda escape both- the blizzard and the Affinity- makes her feelings for him all the more troubling. Will Beckett be true to his word and set Cressenda free? Will her heart let her leave after all they’ve shared?

our thoughts finlFrozen Heart drops readers in a unique world from anything we have ever known. Without much detail I was not certain whether this was supposed to be a imaginative world, or if this was supposed to be a futuristic novel. Either way this did not hinder the understanding of this story, and it was an excited read. Crassandra was a independent and strong character. I was impressed with the drive and determination; while living a life of almost complete solitude. The romance that entails was bitter sweet. While not entirely realistic it was easy to let this story carry you away in a cloud of hope. Being so short it proves fast and easy. It was a very nice display of talent from Annabelle Blume, and it leaves me curious if what we will see next from this author.

Review: Fate by Elizabeth Reyes

Title: Fate

By: Elizabeth Reyes

Series: Spin off of The Moreno Books Series

My Copy: Ebook from Author

BookWhisperer Rating:

four books

When Rose tagged along with her big sister to a baby shower the last thing she expected was to meet a guy. But this wasn’t just any guy. This was the exciting, sexy as sin, way out of her league black sheep of his family--Vincent Moreno. Even more surprising, this heart-stopping bad boy seemed interested in her.

Fate always had a way of interfering in Vince’s best-laid plans. His forced attendance to his annoyingly perfect cousin’s baby shower was no different. He was sure to be bored out of his skull, but instead, he met sweet little Rosie Zendejas.

What begins as an unlikely friendship between two very different teens turns into one of the most intense and passionate relationships that neither ever saw coming. But just like it had so many times in Vince’s troubled past, Fate steps in once again, threatening to take away the one thing he can’t seem to even breathe without now—Rose.

our thoughts finl

When I found out that the next spin off of would be about Rose and Vincent, I was apprehensive.  While reading about Sal and Grace, Rose and Vincent just didn’t seem like they would have a good love story.  But I was wrong!

Reyes can do no wrong in my eyes.  I have never been disappointed in any of her wonderful books; Fate is no exception.

Vincent’s character is very much like his Moreno cousins’ characters.  Once Reyes introduces him and you get to know him, nothing in the world can stop your love for this character.  Rose’s character is just the same as Vincent.  I found that absolutely loved them together!

But, just like in life, bumps in the road knock everything off of course and in this book you feel every emotion that each character experience. Reyes throws the reader for curvy balls throughout the story but it will keep you hooked.

If you loved everything that Reyes has written (and I have), you will no doubt love the story between Vincent and Rose.

Gabriella and Darron thought their magickal battle was over when they defeated the evil warlock, Richard. When her Aunt Donna seeks Gabriella's help in rescuing her catatonic daughter from the Dark Coven, Gabriella discovers that her cousin holds a power within her that would be catastrophic in the hands of the evil witches. Gabriella's coven sets out on a journey that may be their last. Along the way, they meet new allies, face devastating treachery, and battle not only the Dark Coven, but the darkness within themselves. When Gabriella finally comes face to face with the cousin she never knew existed, her true destiny is unveiled, and the fate of the mortal world is in her hands.

our thoughts finl

So I realized why I couldn’t really get into the first book Destiny…it was because it DeLuca was setting up the readers for the second book (or at least that is what I think.)  In Destiny Unveiled, you learn so much more about the characters that were introduced in book one.  I found that I felt more of an emotional connection between Gabby and Darron not only with their characters in the book but my connection with the characters as well.  To me, the characters were real people this time around; you got to know a lot more about them.

Plus, there was a ton more action and drama throughout the plot.  Life did not become all sugar and spice once Richard was defeated in Destiny.  In fact, that was the least hardest thing that DeLuca has put these characters through.

I applaud DeLuca for bringing in so many twists and turn into a book without it being too much for a reader to handle.  It was a steady read of ‘oh, that just happened,’ ‘oh, my!’ and ‘I didn’t see that coming.’

A brutal attack left Lori Brockton convinced she was damaged goods. By the time she emerges from hiding two years later, ready to run her family's famous brewery, she's determined to be independent--never rely on anyone ever again. Nearly a year of working in every corner of Brockton Brewing Company, from warehouse to pub, front office to kitchen, teaches her all she needs to know about the business. Then, she comes face-to-face with masculine perfection in a suit and her world is rocked in more ways than one. Garret Hunter is the new Brockton business manager who takes one look at the beautiful, sad young woman and his entire existence coalesces around winning her heart.

But standing between Garrett and what he believes is his true love, is a six-feet six-inch blond-haired bad boy brewer.

Eli Buchannan is a craft beer rock star, recently hired by Brockton to drag the company into the 21st century. He brings innovation and attitude plus a prima donna ladies’ man reputation. But he's sworn off anything resembling commitment, personal or professional, after getting burned at his last job on both fronts.

Garret Hunter is “The Perfect Man” -- handsome, successful, stable, eager to settle down. Eli Buchannan... is not. Compelling, smoking hot, creative and elusive, he represents everything Lori Brockton should avoid. But just as she makes a difficult choice, a drastic life-changing shift occurs, and nothing is ever the same again.

our thoughts finl

This book started off great for me.  I liked Lori’s character in the sense that she had survived a horrible attack and has been able to slowly work through it.  After meeting Garrett, who helps her work through more of her attack, she seems like a genuinely good woman.  The relationship between Lori and Garrett was sweet and hot all at the same time.  However, when Eli entered the mix, things got a little confusing.

Now don’t get me wrong, I enjoy some love triangles because it always adds spice and drama into the mix.  I had no problem with the love triangle between Lori, Garrett, and Eli.  All of it had me submerged into the story.  However, around 60% of the story is when everything fell flat for me.  All the circumstances that happened after that point had me so confused and angry.  I was mad at the plot, I was mad at the attitude that Lori had, and I was just mad in general that love had switched sides so easily.  I don’t want to go into more detail because I don’t want to give away the whole story.

I would say that the first 60% of this story would get 4 stars from me.  I really liked that part.  But the second part really lowered my love for the book and characters.

The tougher they are, the harder they fall…

Professional mercenary Dare Macintosh lives by one hard and fast rule: business should never be personal. If a cause appeals to him and the price is right, he'll take the mission he's offered. But then the lovely Molly Alexander asks him to help her track down the men who'd had her kidnapped—and for the first time, Dare's tempted to combine work with pleasure.

Fiercely independent, Molly vows to trust no one until she's uncovered the truth. Could the enemy be her powerful, estranged father? The ex-fiancĂ© who still holds a grudge? Or the not-so-shy fan of her bestselling novels? As the danger heats up around them, the only anchor Molly has is Dare himself. But what she feels for him just might be the most frightening thing of all…

our thoughts finl

Where do I sign up for a life like Molly’s (minus the whole kidnapping thing?)

When you Dare wasn’t the exact plot that I thought it would be.  As a reader, you don’t get the kidnapping and rescuing part of the story.  You pick up on the story where Dare just comes back from rescuing a friends sister where he also rescues Molly.  He has no idea what to do with her at first; she complete intrigues him on so many levels.

Molly’s character is so strong that she refuses to break down and ends up hiring Dare to find out who planned her kidnapping.  However, spending all this time together creates these unabashed feelings for each other.  So as a reader, you get coiled into the drama of the case but you also get to experience their passionate love for each other.

Review: Impulse by Dannika Dark

Title: Impulse
By: Dannika Dark
Series: Mageri Series Novel Book 3
My Copy: Ebook from Author
BookWhisperer Rating:

Almost one year ago, a Mage attacked Silver and changed the course of her destiny.
Immortals exist, and now she is one of them.

Within the dark and supernatural city of Cognito, Silver is living under the watchful eye of her Ghuardian and dating her mortal enemy. Neither man can protect her from a dark secret, one buried within the contents of a box. As rival factions struggle to gain control, she finds herself in the middle of a centuries-old feud that threatens to drive a wedge between her and Logan Cross, the man who intends to seduce her.

In an explosive turn of events, one life is saved and another is forever altered. Can Silver trust those around her, or are they hiding a dark secret of their own?

Well I have read all three books of The Mageri series consecutively in the past week. I cannot tell you a single even that has happened in that time, because every second of my time was spent totally enraptured by these characters and this truly amazing storyline. Silver has a knack for trouble, and it will find her even when she is not looking. Over the past three novels I felt as though she alternates between victim and instigator. Although, regardless of her risk taking I absolutely love her character; I just may want to choke her when I foresee the errors in her judgment. If you have read my previous review for book two I reluctantly expressed my bias nature toward Justus and Logan. Darn it, if that Chita is not weaseling his way into my heart! Now I am in a constant struggle with myself, but I still feel the deep seeded loyalty toward Justus. Only now love Logan as well. What is a girl to do? Gotta love me some intense love triangles!!! Even if one of them is a complete "touch me not". With each book the story is twisting farther and farther from the original story base, but it is still carrying its action packed intensity and the most riveting story. As the complications grow, so is the massive cast and it intrigues me more and more with each new addition. Uniquely, I love so many characters with such devotion in one book that I wonder at times how it is even possible. I absolutely love how each character has a deep attachment to Silver, and each one has a devotion and loyal nature that is wonderful. Even when it appears that Silver will find a character that she is at odds with the relationship will end up transforming into one of respect. In the end there is not one character that is a mystery, and each carries a significant position in what I like to call her family. The developments of the last two pages of this book have me hanging on the edge, and I am desperate to see what it means for the future of this story. Unlike past novels, this individual book carries a lot of sorrow. It was not the happier note of justification in the end like I had come to expect, but rather the acknowledgement that like is not always peaches and cream so hold on to what you have. There is still a ways to go for this story, and the only problem is waiting for them to be written.
