Overly Attached to Fictional People
“You know you've read a good book when you turn the last page and feel a little as if you have lost a friend.” ― Paul Sweeney
I’m one of those readers who get overly attached to fictional characters. Being a ‘character reader’, I value the character development process and I find that most YA novels always have that one character that I can relate to in some way, or that one hot character who just gets to me. *winks*
That is actually one of the reasons why I enjoy series instead of standalones. It gives more room for the character to grow and more room for the reader to get attached. That is all great while you are reading the series, but when the series is over, you do truly feel like you have lost a friend. I felt that way about Katniss and Peeta from the Hunger Games, Rose from Vampire Academy, Edward from Twilight… the list is endless.
Now imagine how tough it is to let go of characters who you created and who have been with you for several years. As the Imprinted Souls Series got closer to the end, with the 5th and final book of the series (Shattered Souls) ready to be released, I truly felt as if I would have an emotional breakdown. Those characters have been a part of my life and will always be, but the thought of their ‘lives’ stopping with the end of the series was unimaginable.
All I have to say is, thank God for spin-offs! Yes, Imprinted Souls is getting a spin-off called The Reawakening Series. That was my way to cope with having to let go of the series. I just wasn’t ready to let go of some of the characters yet.
I just wanted to get the message out there to readers who are saddened by the end of any series. Authors are not ending it on purpose. Sometimes characters just finally get their happy ending (or not), and that is it for them. If you are sad about not getting more of a character, just imagine how the author feels.
